Softball splits a pair of wild contests against WWU

Wolves earn walk-off win in game one before Vikings rally for a split against WOU.

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of wild games against Western Washington on Sunday as the Wolves rallied for a 5-4 victory in game one before dropping a 7-5, extra inning decision in game two. With the split, WOU moved to 17-16 overall, 8-4 in conference play, while WWU is now 14-12 overall, 6-6 in league action.

Ali Parkerson was the hero for the Wolves in game one, as she delivered a one-out single to center field, scoring Amanda Evola and Melanie Pfeiffer, to give WOU a walk-off win.

Leading 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh, WWU rallied for four runs to take the lead. Kaleigh Keating and Kristen Allen delivered two-run home runs in the inning as it looked as if the Vikings would steal the win before Parkerson's pinch hit heroics.

WOU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Jourdan Williams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Elaine Sperry as Sperry delivered a two-run double in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-0.

Parkerson's pinch hit gave WOU reliever Eryka Brill the win as she moved to 1-0 on the season after allowing two runs in 0.2 innings of work. Hannah Pomeroy had another solid outing for WOU as the Wolves starter allowed two runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work.

Alexie Levin took the loss for WWU and fell to 4-4 on the season after allowing five runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings of action.

The Vikings managed to rebound in game two; however, as WWU rallied on two occasions to capture the doubleheader split.

Jackie Rothenberger delivered the key blow of the contest as her two-run home run to right-center in the top of the ninth inning have the Vikings a 7-5 lead.

WOU had managed to rally from a one-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh when Williams homered to center field to tie the game; however, the Wolves were unable to answer the Vikings in the ninth as they split a doubleheader for the second day in a row.

Bridjet Box homered in the second inning to give WOU a 2-1 lead while Evola delivered a RBI single in the fourth to give the Wolves a 4-3 advantage; however, WWU managed single runs in the fifth and seventh to put Western Oregon on its heels.

Williams took the loss for WOU and fell to 5-8 on the season while Anisa Wingsness picked up the win for WWU and improved to 4-5 overall after 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

WOU managed 14 hits in the game two loss as Lexi Orteza led the WOU attack with three hits and a run scored.

WOU will return to action on Saturday, March 30, when the Wolves travel to Billings, Mont., to face Montana State Billings in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
