MONMOUTH, Ore. – Hannah Pomeroy and Jourdan Williams tossed back-to-back shutouts to lead the Western Oregon softball team to a sweep of Montana State Billings as the Wolves captured game one, 6-0, before a 1-0 victory in game two. With the sweep, WOU improves to 11-12 overall, 2-0 in league play, while the Yellowjackets fell to 4-9 overall, 0-2 in conference action.

“Our team was simply outstanding today,” head coach Lonny Sargent said. “The pitching and defense were fantastic and we got some clutch hits by our offense. It was a terrific way to start the conference season ; and, hopefully, we can keep it going against a strong Saint Martin's squad on Sunday.”

Pomeroy was the star in game one as she coupled her complete game shutout with a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the Wolves to victory.

After a scoreless first three innings, WOU finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Williams doubled home Melanie Pfeiffer with one out for the first run of the game.

Following a walk to Desiree Villegas, Pomeroy stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and blasted a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall for a grand slam to break the contest open.

Pomeroy would put the finishing touches on the game one win as she lined a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth for her second home run of the day and third of the season.

The right-hander would retire the Yellowjackets in the seventh as she moved to 6-3 on the season after allowing only two hits in the complete game win.

Amanda Todd took the loss for MSU Billings and fell to 2-1 on the year after allowing five runs on two hits in four innings of work.

In game two, Williams won a pitcher's duel as she needed just 71 pitches in the complete game shutout, moving to 3-5 on the season after allowing only four hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.

The Wolves would be unable to get on the board until the game's final inning as WOU loaded the bases with one out following a pair of walks and a single. Pfeiffer gave the Wolves the win when she lined a 1-2 pitch into left-center, scoring Bridjet Box from third to give WOU the win and the doubleheader sweep of MSUB.

Jessyka MacDonald was the tough-luck loser for MSUB in game two after allowing only one run on six hits in 6.1 innings of work as she fell to 2-2 on the season.

WOU, which has won four in a row, returns to action on Sunday, March 10, when the Wolves host Saint Martin's in a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
