MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon softball team travels for a pair of important Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheaders this week as the Wolves open with a twin-bill at Simon Fraser on Saturday, April 20, at 1:00 p.m. followed by a pair of games at Western Washington on Sunday, April 21, at 12:00 p.m.
The Wolves enter the week with an overall record of 20-23 and stand in fourth-place in the conference with a 9-7 mark after falling in a pair of games at Saint Martin's last week. The top four teams in the league will advance to the GNAC Softball Tournament in Billings, Mont., with a spot at the NCAA Softball West Regional on the line.
The Wolves, batting.271 as a team, are led at the plate by
Amanda Evola, as the outfielder leads the team in batting average (.370), on base percentage (,412), slugging pct. (.652), and home runs (8).
Jourdan Williams (.333) and
Desiree Villegas (.318) have also been having outstanding seasons at the plate for the Wolves..
In the circle, WOU is led by
Hannah Pomeroy as the right-hander has posted a 10-7 record along with a 4.08 ERA and 62 strikeouts. WOU's pitching staff has an ERA of 4.28 in 281 innings pitched.
Simon Fraser enters the week at 20-17 overall and 8-3 in GNAC play following their win last week over British Columbia. The Clan, who bat .279 as a team, are lead at the plate by Carly Lepoutre, who leads SFU in batting at .336.
Simon Fraser's strong pitching staff leads the GNAC in strikeouts (183) and ranks second in ERA (3.13) and opposing batting average (.254). Kelsie Hawkins leads the way in the circle as she is 12-5 with a 2.26 ERA (second in GNAC) and 104 strikeouts (leads GNAC).
Meanwhile, Western Washington enters the week at 19-19 overall and one game behind the Wolves in the conference standings at 8-8. The Vikings are currently hitting .279 as a team with Kristen Allen leading the way with a .340 batting average. In the circle, Jenna DeRosier enters the week with a 7-7 mark while posting a 3.72 ERA in 96 innings pitched.
In their first meetings of the season, the Wolves split doubleheaders against WWU and SFU in Monmouth.
Following this week's action, the Wolves will return home for a doubleheader against Northwest Nazarene on Friday, April 26, at 1:00 p.m. The contests will serve as WOU's annual “Strike Out Cancer” games.
