BURNABY, B.C. – The Western Oregon softball team picked up a pair of important Great Northwest Athletic Conference wins as the Wolves swept a doubleheader from Simon Fraser on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Clan, 4-0, before a 10-6 win in game two. With the sweep, WOU moves to 22-23 overall, 11-7 in conference play, while SFU falls to 21-18, 11-6 in league action.
Hannah Pomeroy was the star in game one for WOU as she tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit while striking out five to improve to 11-6 on the year. The senior allowed only two base-runners all game as Alex Baylak recorded the only hit in the contest for SFU with her single in the second inning.
The Wolves would get all the scoring they would need when
Desiree Villegas blasted a two-run home run, her first of the season, to score
Jourdan Williams to give WOU a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Amanda Evola would cap the scoring in the victory as she hit a two-run shot of her own in the third inning, scoring
Melanie Pfeiffer as the centerfielder hit her team-leading ninth home run of the year.
Cara Lukawesky took the loss for SFU and fell to 7-10 on the year after allowing four runs on three hits in seven innings of work.
In game two, WOU jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Wolves held on for a 10-6 win to pick up the important doubleheader sweep.
The Wolves jumped on the Clan early with four runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Ashley Cashin and Pfeiffer each recorded RBI in the inning to give WOU the early advantage.
After
Bridjet Box blasted her fourth home run of the season to make the score 5-0, the Wolves exploded for three runs in the fourth to take an eight-run lead. Evola opened the scoring with a RBI on a fielder's choice before coming around to score with
Lexi Orteza on a SFU error as the Wolves had complete control of the contest.
SFU rallied for five runs in the fifth to cut the lead to three; however, home runs by Pfeiffer and Box in the seventh put the game out of reach as the Wolves claimed the 10-6 win. The home run by Box was her second of the contest and fifth of the season while Pfeiffer connected on her first career blast.
Williams picked up the win in the circle for WOU as she improved to 7-10 on the season after allowing three runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Kelsey Hawkins took the loss for SFU and fell to 12-6 overall after allowing 10 runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The wins allowed WOU to move two games ahead of Western Washington for fourth-place in the GNAC standings. The top four teams in the regular season standings will go on to advance to the GNAC Tournament with the winner earning a berth in the NCAA West Region Softball Championship.
WOU will conclude the four-game road trip when the Wolves travel to Western Washington for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 21, at 12:00 p.m.
