BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon softball team picked up an important split on the road against Western Washington on Sunday as the Wolves defeated the Vikings in game one, 6-3, before falling to WWU, 6-2, in the nightcap. With the split, WOU improves to 23-24 overall, 12-8 in league play while WWU moves to 21-21 overall, 10-10 in conference action.
The split gives WOU a two-game lead over the Vikings for fourth-place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings as the top four teams will advance to the GNAC Tournament at the end of the season.
After tossing a one-hitter against Simon Fraser,
Hannah Pomeroy shined once again as she allowed only one earned run to pick up the game one victory. The right hander allowed only four hits in seven innings of work as she improved to 12-6 on the season.
Jenna DeRosier took the loss for WWU, falling to 7-9 on the year after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Jourdan Williams delivered the key hit for WOU in the win as her two-run blast in the fourth inning extended the Wolves lead to 5-2. The infielder would connect on her second home run of the contest in the seventh inning as she hammered a solo shot down the left field line to give WOU a four-run cushion.
WWU would cut the lead to three on a wild pitch; however, Pomeroy would close out the complete game win for her second victory of the weekend.
In game two, the Vikings managed to earn a split as WWU would jump out to an early, four-run lead and hold on for a 6-2 win.
Eryka Brill took the loss for WOU and fell to 2-3 on the year while Alexie Levin earned the win for WWU, moving to 9-6 on the season after allowing two runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Jordan Walley went 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI as her three-run home run in the third gave the Vikings a 4-0 lead.
Amanda Evola went 3-for-3 with a run scored while
Desiree Villegas and Pomeroy added two hits apiece in the loss.
The start of the doubleheader was delayed due to a lengthy rain delay.
WOU will return to action on Friday, April 26, when the Wolves host Northwest Nazarene for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
