TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Oregon softball team rebounded from a 10-5 loss to Simon Fraser in game one of the Tournament of Champions to claim a 7-6 win over Cal State Stanislaus in game two as the Wolves split a pair of games on the first day of the annual tournament on Friday. With the split, WOU moves to 19-18 overall on the season.
Following the game one loss, WOU fell behind early against CS Stanislaus; however, the Wolves responded with six unanswered runs to grab control of the contest. Trailing 4-1 in the third, WOU cut the lead to two when
Jourdan Williams singled up the middle, scoring
Lexi Orteza from third as the Wolves would trail 4-2 heading into the fourth.
After holding CSUS scoreless in the top of the inning, WOU answered with three runs to take a one-run lead they would never relinquish. Orteza got the scoring started as her triple to right scored
Danielle Hannan to cut the lead to one as Orteza would score on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Amanda Evola would then give the Wolves the lead for good as she delivered a single to right field, scoring
Melanie Pfeiffer as WOU would take a 5-4 lead.
The Wolves would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth as
Danielle Harcourt scored on a wild pitch with Pfeiffer delivering a RBI single to make the score 7-4.
The insurance was needed as CSUS managed single runs in the sixth and seventh; however, it would not be enough as
Hannah Pomeroy stifled the rally to improve to 10-4 on the season after allowing six runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.
Natalie Rendon took the loss for the Warriors and fell to 5-10 on the season after allowing five runs on four hits in four innings of work.
WOU managed to score the seven runs on just five hits as the Wolves took advantage of nine walks to get the win.
Kristan Burns and Laura Liming led the Warriors attack with two hits apiece.
In game one, WOU was unable to overcome an early six-run deficit as Simon Fraser picked up a five-run victory.
Stephanie Morgan took the loss for WOU and fell to 2-4 on the season after allowing five earned runs in four innings while Cara Lukawesky picked up the win, moving to 7-8 after allowing five runs on six hits in the complete game win.
Pfeiffer and Evola each had two hits to lead the Wolves attack as Trisha Bouchard, Kaitlyn Cameron and Nicole Ratel each recorded two RBI to lead the Clan.
Simon Fraser grabbed control of the game with a five-run third inning as Ratel's two-run single capped the outburst with a two-run single to give the Clan a 6-0 lead.
WOU responded with four in the fourth-inning to cut the lead to 6-4; however, would not draw any closer in the loss.
The Wolves close out round robin play at the tournament with three games on Saturday, April 6. Their first game is at 8:45 a.m. against Hawaii Pacific, followed by Somona State at 11:15 a.m. before closing the day against Notre Dame de Namur at 4:30 p.m.
