Box Score MONMOUTH, Ore. –
Hannah Deede just missed out on a triple-double with 16 kills, 12 blocks and eight digs as the junior led the Western Oregon volleyball team to a thrilling, 3-2 (17-25, 31-29, 25-27, 25-23, 15-8) victory over No. 24 Central Washington on Thursday. With the win, WOU improved to 4-6 overall, 1-0 in league play, while Central Washington drops to 4-5 overall, 0-1 in conference action.
Deede led the Wolves during a wild match that saw three sets decided by two points. After falling 25-17 in the first set, WOU would win a wild second set as the Wolves would close out the frame with three straight set points after trailing 29-28. The set was capped by an attack error by Kaitlin Quick following back-to-back kills by
Christie Colasurdo.
CWU would rebound to win the third set to move within one of the match; however, the Wolves responded with back-to-back set wins to claim the important victory.
Becky Blees would give the Wolves the win in set four with the deciding kill before WOU would jump out to a 10-1 lead in the deciding match.
Blees would put the finishing touches on the victory, slamming home a kill on match point to give the Wolves a win over a ranked opponent for the first time since a win over Western Washington last season.
Deede led a balanced WOU attack as the Wolves stuffed the stat-sheet in the five-set win. Colasurdo had a team-high 18 kills while
Krissi Kemper and Clees added 10 apiece for a balanced WOU attack.
On the defensive end, WOU held CWU to a .161 attack percentage as the Wolves had 14 team blocks on the night. In addition to Deede's 12 stops, Blees added 10 while Kemper provided three blocks to lead the defensive effort.
Maddie Kuther switched to the libero position following the second set to record 25 digs to while
Megan Triggs added 20 to aid the densive effort.
Offensively,
Jordin Ramos posted 29 assists and
Erin Dobson connected on 21 sets to create the balanced WOU offensive attack.
Central Washington's Linden Firethorne led all players in the match with 20 kills while the Wildcats' Catie Fry added 52 assists.
WOU will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21, as the Wolves host Northwest Nazarene at 7:00 p.m.
