BURNABY, B.C. – On a wet and windy Saturday, the Western Oregon football team used a stout defense and balanced offensive attack to defeat Simon Fraser, 30-9, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, WOU moved to 2-2 overall, 2-1 in league play, while SFU was handed its first loss of the season and fell to 2-1 overall, 2-1 in conference action.
The WOU defense was the bright spot on a dark and dreary day as the Wolves held one of the nation's most potent offensive attacks to just 313 yards of total offense and no touchdowns.
Throughout the first two quarters, neither team was able to get into a rhythm offensively as the teams traded field goals before
Jesse Correa's 19-yard field goal with 25 seconds left in the half gave the Wolves a 9-6 lead.
After the break, WOU would control the action as the Wolves outscored the Clan 21-3 over the final two quarters for the 21-point win.
The Wolves rushing attack would provide the spark as
Joe Harris would cap a four-play, 54-yard drive with a two-yard scoring plunge to give WOU a 16-6 lead early in the third quarter.
Following a 27-yard field goal by SFU early in the fourth quarter, Harris would put the Wolves on the board again with an eight-yard dash with eight minutes remaining to give WOU an important two-touchdown lead. The scamper capped a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was aided by a roughing the kicker penalty by SFU on a fourth-down early in the drive.
Ryan Bergman would put the finishing touches on the victory as he found
Michael Reeve on an eight-yard touchdown pass with 2:52 left to give the Wolves a 30-9 lead. The toss concluded am eight-play, 63-yard drive that drained 4:20 off the clock and cemented the WOU win.
On a day where the rushing attack would be crucial, WOU managed to find its ground attack as the Wolves finished with 131 yards on the ground. Harris rushed for 86 yards on 25 carries while Nathan Penaranda finished the day with 48 yards on 10 carries.
Bergman had another solid day through the air, tossing for 234 yards (14-of-33) and a touchdown while
Tyrell Williams led all players with 114 yards receiving.
Defensively,
Kraig Akins led a terrific day by the Wolves defense, making 11 tackles to lead the Wolves while recording two sacks and three tackles for losses.
Adam McAdams and
Devin Wells added interceptions for WOU.
Stanford led SFU in the loss, going 11-of-17 for 148 yards with a pair of interceptions before leaving the game early in the third quarter with an injury.
WOU will look to make it three wins in a row when the Wolves host Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1:00 p.m.
