Clan Crawls Away with Win

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team pulled away from Western Oregon University on the road Saturday, 56-47, for its 10th win of the season.

The Clan's (10-5, 4-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) Rebecca Langmead finished with the fifth best block total in GNAC history. The senior had seven blocks, which is also the most in the conference in the past six years, matching her career-high total. She added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Katie Lowen scored a game-high 18 points. She made 6-of-17 from the field, and 4-of-13 from behind-the-arc. The junior also dished out a game-high five assists. Erin Chambers, the conference's leading scorer, finished with 11 points.

Simon Fraser was limited to 35 percent shooting from the field, but held WOU to a season-low 25.8 percent. SFU was 8-for-24 from three-point range, and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. The Clan had a slim 44-43 edge in rebounds.

The Clan, which defeated Western Oregon for the fifth straight time, never trailed in the contest. SFU jumped out to a 7-0 lead, before Kelsey Henry scored the Wolves first basket three minutes into the game. Langmead gave Simon Fraser a 17-7 advantage, it largest of the half, midway through the opening stanza. Western Oregon closed within five points on three occasions, including halftime, 29-24.

Simon Fraser spread the margin to 12 points just into the second half after a Lowen jumper. The Wolves slowly cut into the lead, and came within four points twice. Leading 42-38 with 6:50 remaining in regulation, the Clan went on a decisive 8-0 run to pull away from WOU. For the second straight game, Western Oregon was held to only seven made shots from the field in the second half. SFU made nine of its 29 shots from the field in the second half.

Dana Goularte led the Wolves (5-10, 2-5 GNAC) with 14 points. The junior was 4-of-7 from the field. Chantel Divilbiss chipped in 10 points. Elise Miller grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. WOU made five of its three-point attempts and 10-of-16 from the free throw line. Western Oregon forced 18 Clan turnovers, while committing 15.

Western Oregon travels to Seattle Pacific (11-4, 4-3) in its next game Thursday. The Falcons have won 32 of the previous 37 meetings, and 18 straight over the Wolves at SPU. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on WOUWolves.com.
