Nanooks Sweep #WOUVolleyball



FAIRBANKS, Alaska – In a matchup between winless teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, it was the University of Alaska volleyball team (1-14, 1-6 GNAC) who claimed their first victory of the season over Western Oregon University (2-12, 0-5 GNAC) in three-straight sets Thursday, 15-25, 15-25 and 17-25.
 
The Nanooks were led by an attack percentage of .260 to the Wolves' .033. UAF also carried a large 35-22 advantage in total kills for the match.
 
Brooke Mattice paced the team with nine kills, one of five players to reach five kills for the Nanooks. Sam Harthun led all players with 13 digs. Tessa Butterfield had nine digs and Mattice added eight more. Miranda Grieser put up a game-high 18 assists.
 
WOU made 19 attack errors, with Alaska making just nine. The Wolves also made six return errors to just one for UAF. Each team made nine service errors.
 
Hannah Deede and Alisha Bettinson led the Wolves with six kills apiece. Christie Colasurdo and Sheila De La Cruz each totaled 11 digs. Colasurdo added five kills and the team's lone service ace. Samantha Moore reached 10 assists. Jordin Ramos added seven assists and digs.
 
With the loss, WOU dropped their sixth straight match. They will look to rebound on the road against the University of Alaska Anchorage (12-3, 6-1 GNAC) on Saturday at 7 p.m. AT.
