CORVALLIS, Ore. – Western Oregon University's men's basketball team never relinquished its lead throughout the game, as the Wolves upset NCAA Division I member Oregon State University, 57-47, in an exhibition game Friday inside Gill Coliseum.
Andy Avgi led all players with a game-high 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with an 8-for-9 performance at the free throw line, while
Jordan Wiley and
Devon Alexander both scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Julian Nichols added eight points and a team-high tying seven rebounds, while teaming with Alexander on a team-high tying four assists each.
Oregon State was led offensively by Gary Payton II and Malcolm Duvivier with 10 points each, while Victor Robbins scored eight points off the Beavers' bench. Payton II also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds en route to registering a double-double, while also handing out a game-high six assists.
"(Tonight's win) feels good, really good," said Head Coach
Brady Bergeson. "We're off to the start that we wanted to be in terms of the execution and trademarks that we are trying to establish early on so that part feels like we are on the right track."
Western Oregon began the game by scoring the opening seven points within a three-minute span, as the Wolves opened the contest with a 7-0 lead. Oregon State would not score its first two points until the 16:09 mark, as the Wolves continued to hold the lead increasing its margin to as much as 17 points (27-10) on a jumper by Avgi with 5:36 on the clock. WOU would never relinquish its double-digit lead for the remainder of the first half, as Western Oregon took a 32-19 lead into halftime following a Avgi three-pointer in the final seconds.
Avgi led all players with 13 points in the first half on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, while Alexander and Nichols added six points each over the opening twenty minutes of play.
The second half would begin with Western Oregon slowly increasing its lead back to 17 points (43-26) on a lay-in by Nichols with just over 12 minutes left in the game. Over the next nine-plus minutes, Oregon State used a 19-8 run that pulled the Beavers within six points (51-45) before
Jordan Wiley hit his third and final three-pointer of the night that jump started a 6-0 run by Western Oregon over a span of 26 seconds. A pair of free throws by Avgi and another bucket from the charity stripe by Wiley handed the Wolves a 12-point lead (57-45), as Western Oregon cruised to a 10-point win (57-47) en route to picking up WOU's first-ever win over Oregon State in four games.
As a team, Western Oregon combined to shoot 18-for-62 (29.0%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-24 (29.2%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 14-for-19 (73.7%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Oregon State was a combined 16-for-45 (35.6%) from the field, 3-for-13 (23.1%) from long distance, and 12-for-26 (46.2%) at the charity stripe.
Western Oregon will close out the exhibition portion of its schedule on Sunday, November 9, against Oregon beginning at 6:00 p.m. inside Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene.
