CORVALLIS, Ore. – In its final exhibition game of the season, Western Oregon University's women's basketball team fell to No. 20-ranked Oregon State, 98-38, Sunday inside historic Gill Coliseum.
As a team, Western Oregon combined to shoot 14-for-52 (26.9%) from the field to go along with a 4-for-15 (26.7%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 6-of-9 (66.7%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Oregon State was a combined 42-for-73 (57.5%) from the field that included a 22-of-32 (68.8%) performance in the first half. The Beavers were also a combined 9-of-20 (45.0%) from beyond the arc and 5-of-14 (35.7%) at the charity stripe.
Dana Goularte led the Wolves with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field to go along with a 4-for-5 performance at the free throw line, while
Shyla Akins added eight points that included six in the opening half.
Katie Goddard and
Sami Osborne added four and three points, respectively, while the trio of
Jordan Mottershaw,
Michelle Bromagem, and
Sydney Azorr chipped in with two points each. On the boards, Goularte led the Wolves with five rebounds with Azorr handing out a pair of assists for WOU.
For Oregon State, Jamie Weisner led all players with 25 points on a perfect 10-for-10 shooting from the field that included a 5-for-5 showing from beyond the three-point line. Four other Beavers – Ruth Hamblin, Kolbie Orum, Ali Gibson, and Marie Gulich – also scored in double figures with 13, 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Hamblin registered a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Sydney Wiese handed out a game-high five assists for OSU.
Western Oregon began the game without a point over the opening three minutes until Goularte knocked down a pair of free throws with 16:13 left in the first half. Oregon State would score eight unanswered points until Akins connected on a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 13:42 on the clock. Another three-pointer by Osborne pulled Western Oregon within 14 points (22-8), but that would be as close as the Wolves would get as Oregon State slowly pushed its lead to 33 points (54-21) at halftime.
The second half would begin with Western Oregon being held scoreless over the opening four minutes, as Oregon State built a 42-point lead (63-21) that they would never relinquished. The nationally-ranked Beavers continued to hold a 40-plus point lead throughout the remainder of the game, as Oregon State grabbed a 62-point lead (98-36) with 98 seconds left. Bromagem would cap the game's scoring with a pair of free throws in the final minute, as Western Oregon held the Beavers under 100 points.
The Wolves will return to action on Friday, November 14, in the second game of the Hampton Inn & Suites D2 Shootout against Regis University (Colo.) beginning at 4:00 p.m. inside the New P.E. Building.
