Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#WOUWBB Falls to Central Washington in GNAC Contest

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Despite a game-high 17 points by senior Dana Goularte, Western Oregon University's women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Central Washington University, 60-34, Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play inside Nicholson Pavilion.

"Credit goes to Central, they outplayed us in every aspect of the game," said Head Coach Holli Howard-Carpenter. "We were a completely different team from our Thursday night game. Offensively we were out of rhythm and were not playing as a team and Central capitalized on that."

Goularte was the Western Oregon player to score in double figures, as junior Katie Goddard provided eight points off WOU's bench with four other players – junior Shyla Akins, sophomore Jordan Mottershaw, freshman Sydney Azorr, and freshman Sami Osborne – providing two points each. Junior Emily Howey would round out Western Oregon's scoring with one point, while Osborne grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds for the Wolves to go along with a pair of assists for her and Azorr.

"Dana and Angie were working hard to get us on the same page and give us some energy, but we just didn't have it tonight," added Howard-Carpenter. "To go from scoring 34 points in a half to in an entire game is just unacceptable."

Central Washington (5-2, 2-0 GNAC) was led offensively by Hannah Shine with 16 points off the Wildcats' bench, while Jasmin Edwards chipped in with 15 points for CWU. On the boards, Melanie Valdez and Courtney Johnson grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds each, while Johnson also handed out a game-high five assists.

The game began with Central Washington jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead before Western Oregon (2-5, 1-1 GNAC) could even get on the scoreboard. Despite an old-fashion three-point play by Goularte that pulled the Wolves within four points (7-3) with 17:11 on the clock, Central Washington would continue to hold the lead as Western Oregon got within 10-9 at the 13:28 mark on a lay-in by Mottershaw with 13:28 left. That would be as close as the Wolves would get, as CWU slowly pushed its lead to 31-21 at halftime.

Central Washington began the second half with a 19-2 run over the opening 12 minutes, as the Wildcats grabbed a 27-point lead (50-23) on a three-pointer by Shine with 8:14 left. Western Oregon would get within 22 points (53-31) behind an 8-3 run over a span of four minutes, as Central Washington closed out the game by scoring seven of the final 10 points en route to the final score of 60-34.

As a team, Western Oregon combined to shoot 11-for-48 (22.9%) from the field that included a 3-for-17 (17.6%) showing from beyond the three-point line to go along with a 9-for-11 (81.8%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Central Washington was a combined 19-for-50 (38.0%) from the field, 8-for-21 (38.1%) from long distance, and 14-of-19 (73.7%) at the charity stripe.

Western Oregon will return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 13, against PacWest Conference member and nationally-ranked California Baptist beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Van Dyne Gymnasium in Riverside, California.
