Softball Sweeps on Second Day

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Western Oregon softball team grabbed a pair of victories on the second day of the Rattler Invitational Saturday. The Wolves beat Midwestern State (Texas) 9-7, before knocking off Rogers State (Okla.) 10-8 in the nightcap.

Western Oregon (5-8) has now won four of its past five games, with two remaining contests at the Rattler Invitational Sunday. Amanda Evola was 6-for-9 at the plate Saturday, with four RBI. The junior hit a pair of doubles, bringing her total to three in the tournament. Kelli Demianew and Jourdan Williams both picked up victories on the mound.

Ashlie Gardner went 2-for-4 at the plate against Midwestern State. The senior finished with three RBI and a home run. Evola was 4-for-4 and drove in a pair of scores. Melanie Pfeiffer also went 2-for-4 and Jourdan Williams also had two RBI.

Demianew threw the final three innings, allowing no earned runs on one hit. She struck out two Mustangs and had no walks. Williams pitched the first five innings.

The Wolves opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Pfeiffer and Kelsie Gardner were brought in on an error and Bridjet Box drove in Evola on a sacrifice fly to right field. MSU then scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings to take a 6-3 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Evola doubled to center field and scored two runs. She was then driven in on a Williams' single through the left side. With the game tied, the Mustangs scored a run in the eighth on a double, but an Ashlie Gardner three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning finished the scoring.

The Mustangs (9-6) had three players with two RBI. Kim Jerrick was 3-for-4 at the plate. Katherine Batey (2-2) was credited with the loss.

In the win over Roger State, the Wolves scored 10 runs on 13 hits and picked up the win despite five errors. Western Oregon jumped out to an early lead again with two runs in the first inning. After the Hillcats scored one run in the bottom of the first, WOU reeled off five runs through the second and fourth innings. RSU answered with five runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. The Wolves again rallied with a tying run in the eighth and two winning runs in the ninth.

Evola drove in the winning score in the top of the ninth with a double to right field, and finished with two RBI. She was 2-for-5 in the game. Pfeiffer went 3-for-5. Ashlie Gardner also hit a double. Williams (3-1) tossed the final 2.2 innings and received the win. She allowed no runs and one hit.

Yolonda Rios (2-4) had the loss for Rogers State. She made 58 pitches in the final three innings, allowing one earned run. Jamie Kowalick and Jackie Flores both went 3-for-5 for the Hillcats (2-6). They both had one RBI.

The Wolves return to the Rattler Invitational Sunday for two more games. Western Oregon faces Midwestern State again at 10 a.m. CT, and Oklahoma Christian at 12 p.m. CT. Both games will have live coverage on WOUWolves.com.
