Softball Splits to Complete Rattler Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Western Oregon University softball team finished the Rattler Invitational hosted by St. Mary's University with a split Sunday. The Wolves dropped a 2-1 decision to Midwestern State (Texas), before holding off Oklahoma Christian, 5-4, in the second game.

Western Oregon (6-9) won four of its six games at the tournament. Melanie Pfeiffer went 3-for-7 on the final day of the three-day tournament. Ashlie Gardner had two RBI Sunday. Eryka Brill picked up her second win of the season.

In the loss to Midwestern State, both pitchers had excellent showings on the mound. Erin Knox (5-2) recorded the win. The freshman gave up one earned run on six hits. She struck out four Wolves and walked one. Kelli Demianew (1-4) allowed two earned runs on five hits. Both pitchers had complete game performances.

The Mustangs' (10-8) two runs came on extra base hits. A double to left field in the first inning came before a solo home run from Baylee Voigt in the second inning. Amanda Evola drove in WOU's lone run. The junior grounded out to the shortstop in the fifth inning, bringing in Danielle Hannan.

Pfeiffer was 2-for-4 for Western Oregon in the loss. Hannan went 2-for-3 at the plate. Pfeiffer and Evola both had a stolen base. The Wolves stranded seven runners on base, while MSU left four.

In the tournament finale, WOU had to hold off a late Oklahoma Christian (6-6) rally. The Eagles opened the scoring with a run in the third inning, but Western Oregon responded with five runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. In the third inning, Kelsie Gardner singled to left field and brought in Elaine Sperry, and then Kelsie Gardner and Pfeiffer scored on an OCU error in the outfield. The Eagles threatened with three runs in the last three innings.

Kelsie Gardner went 2-for-3 in the victory, while Ashlie Gardner had two RBI. Danielle Harcourt had a double for the Wolves. Brill (2-1) threw all seven innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits. Taylor Mosher (2-3) was credited with the loss in the complete game effort.

Ashlie Gardner and Pfeiffer were both named to the All-Tournament team in the infield. Western Oregon has a break before traveling to Concordia (Ore.) for a doubleheader on March 4. The games will have live video and stats on WOUWolves.com. The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
