MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University softball team won its fifth and sixth consecutive games with a pair of victories over Northwest Christian University (Ore.), 2-1 and 7-4, Tuesday.
The Wolves (13-10, 4-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) completed their non-conference schedule with the wins. Western Oregon has now won seven of its last eight contests.
Amanda Evola went 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBI.
Bridjet Box was 3-for-6 with two doubles.
Kelli Demianew and
Jourdan Williams both picked up victories on the mound.
Western Oregon scored a pair of runs in the first two innings in Game 1, and was able to hold off a NCU rally. In the bottom of the first inning, Evola hit a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in
Melanie Pfeiffer. In the following inning, Dani Harcourt singled to left field and Box scored on an error by the outfielder. Parker Bonife brought in Randi Kostner with a single down the left field line in the fourth inning.
In the Game 1 pitchers' duel, Williams (4-1) pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on three hits. She had two strikeouts and no walks.
Stephanie Morgan grabbed her first save of the season after giving up only one hit over the final three innings. Bre Johnson (0-4) was credited with the loss. She allowed one earned one three hits in five innings of work.
The teams combined for nine hits, with WOU coming away with five. The Beacons committed both errors in the game. Western Oregon stranded four runners on base, while NCU left three.
In the second game, the Wolves used three late runs to pull away with the victory. Evola opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a single through the left side that drove in Pfeiffer. Northwest Christian matched the run in the second inning, but WOU countered in the bottom of the third with three runs. A two-RBI single up the middle by Williams brought in Evola and
Kelsie Gardner. Williams later scored on a throwing error.
The Beacons (1-10) evened the score in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Gabby Stover. In the sixth inning, Evola hit a single to center field that scored Dani Hannan. After Pfeiffer scored on a wild pitch, Evola crossed home plate on a steal.
Demianew (3-5) recorded the win on the mound after throwing the final two innings. She allowed no runs on three hits. She struck out one batter and had no walks. Katie Walker (0-3) had the loss for NCU.
Pfeiffer is now fourth in the conference with a .415 batting average. She leads the GNAC with 34 hits, 1.48 hits per game average, 25 runs, and 1.09 runs per game average. Evola leads the conference in doubles (9), RBI (24), and total bases (50).
Western Oregon travels to Simon Fraser and Western Washington Saturday and Sunday. The Clan (0-13, 0-4 GNAC) are still looking for its first win of the season. The doubleheader, which begins at 1 p.m., features live video and stats on WOUWolves.com.
