MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University softball team extended its win streak to 10 games after a pair of 6-2 victories over Saint Martin's University (Wash.) Friday.
The Wolves (17-10, 8-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) remained unbeaten in conference play and currently sit alone atop the standings after knocking off the defending GNAC champion twice. WOU is one victory away from matching the program's longest win streak. In 2008, Western Oregon won 11 straight games late in the season, before finishing with a 33-18 record. The 2014 team became only the second Wolves' softball team to ever reach a double-digit consecutive win total.
Raina Reece had a stellar day, driving in five runs and hitting a pair of home runs. The freshman finished 3-of-6 at the plate. Her third and fourth home runs of the season moved her to fourth in the conference.
Bridjet Box also finished 3-of-6, bringing in four runs.
Kelli Demianew grabbed her fifth win of the season on the mound. She tossed a complete-game in the second game.
Eryka Brill also picked up a win in Game 1.
In the second at-bat of the first game, Megan Miller drove of a ball over the center field fence to give the Saints the early lead. The conference's leader in runs,
Melanie Pfeiffer, evened the score when she crossed the plate on a throwing error in the bottom of the first. The next batter,
Jourdan Williams, lined out to left field and drove in
Kelsie Gardner.
After SMU tied the score at two in the top of the fifth inning, the Wolves broke the game open with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Box drove in Pfeiffer with a single up the middle for the go-ahead run. Reece then hit a three-run shot over the right center field fence.
Brill (6-1) continued her strong season on the mound posting the victory. She allowed one earned run on seven hits. The senior struck out one Saint and threw one walk through six innings. Demianew came in and finished the final inning. Sam Munger (8-6) was credited with the loss. She allowed one earned run and fanned four Wolves.
Pfeiffer extended her hitting streak to 11 games after three hits, including her third double of the season. Saint Martin's left eight runners on base, while WOU stranded six. Both teams committed four errors.
The preseason conference favorite Saints (11-11, 6-3 GNAC) scored first again in Game 2. Taviah Jenkins hit a two-run double to right field in the top of the first. Box answered in the bottom of the first with a two-run double of her own through the left side. Williams brought in the winning run, Box, with a double to left field later in the first. Box hit an RBI single in the third inning, before Reece capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
Demianew (5-5) allowed no earned runs in her seven-inning performance. She did not have a strikeout and walked one Saint. The junior threw 71 pitches. Kaylee Lawson (3-5) was credited with the loss. Western Oregon had 10 hits and two errors, while SMU finished with six hits and one error.
The Wolves welcome Central Washington (13-6, 6-2) for a doubleheader Sunday. The Wildcats have a doubleheader Saturday at Saint Martin's. Sunday's doubleheader begins at 12 p.m., with live video and stats on WOUWolves.com.
