Softball Takes Three in Tripleheader

NAMPA, Idaho – The Western Oregon University softball team swept a tripleheader at Northwest Nazarene University, 12-3, 5-2, and 15-5, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Friday.

The Wolves (21-11, 12-1 GNAC) become the first team in the conference to reach the 20-win plateau this season, and remain atop the GNAC standings. Western Oregon has won 13 of its last 14 games. WOU and Northwest Nazarene played three-of-the-four games in the weekend series due to forecasted weather on Saturday. The fourth game will be played Saturday.

Amanda Evola extended the conference's longest hit streak to 14 games. That equals the eighth longest in GNAC history. The junior finished 5-for-12 at the plate with four RBI. Melanie Pfeiffer was 7-for-12 with three RBI, and Raina Reece was 5-for-12 with five RBI. Pfeiffer, Reece, and Ashlie Gardner all had two doubles. Bridjet Box was 2-for-6 and was walked five times. Ashlee Lynch was 3-for-5 with a triple. In the circle, Sammi Cadwallader (3-2) grabbed a pair of victories.

Also on the mound, Kelli Demianew (7-5) had her streak of innings without allowing an earned run end at 30. The Pendleton, Ore. native, grabbed a win in the second game, but gave up one earned run. Her 30.2 innings without an earned run matches the 10th best mark in conference history. Demianew became the first WOU pitcher to reach 30 innings without allowing an unearned since 2003, and only the second Wolf to achieve the feat since joining the GNAC.

The Crusaders' (8-20, 2-8) Alyssa Nitschelm had a pair of hits in each the first and third game and added an RBI in the second contest, while Justine Callen had two hits and an RBI in the opener and Whitney Carlton had a hit and two RBIs in the nightcap for NNU.

Western Oregon has won now won 11 straight over Northwest Nazarene, and 51 of the 65 meetings in the all-time series. The Wolves have won 10 straight at NNU and are 31-6 all-time in Nampa. The last Crusader win in the series came in Monmouth in 2012.
