CLACKAMAS, Ore. – The Western Oregon University softball team split a non-conference series against Concordia University (Ore.), 4-2 and 3-4, Tuesday.
The Wolves' (7-10)
Melanie Pfeiffer went 5-for-8 at the plate in the doubleheader.
Kelsie Gardner was 4-for-8, scoring three times, with an RBI.
Raina Reece drove in four RBI on three hits.
Amanda Evola also had a trio of hits.
Eryka Brill picked up a victory on the mound.
In the first game, Gardner went 3-for-4, while Reece drove in three runs. Brill (3-1) allowed two earned runs on seven hits in the complete game performance. She struck out two Cavaliers, while walking two. The senior threw 59 strikes in her 86 total pitches.
A Reece double down the left field line brought in the first run as Gardner scored in the top of the first. Concordia countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Both pitchers settled down and did not allow a run until the final inning. Brill only gave up two hits through the second and sixth innings. Danielle Orvella allowed three hits over the same span.
Gardner hit a single to center field in the seventh inning that drove in
Danielle Hannan to tie the game. A Reece single to left field then brought in Gardner and Pfeiffer. The Cavaliers left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
Orvella (2-4) gave up three earned runs on nine hits over seven innings. She fanned three WOU batters, and walked two. The senior threw 130 pitches. Meghan Luebbert was 2-for-4.
Pfeiffer went 4-for-4 in Game 2, but it was Concordia (6-8) that came out on top. Western Oregon opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning. A Reece single to left field scored Pfeiffer and Box brought in Evola on a groundout to second. The Cavaliers responded with three runs in the third and fourth innings.
Box evened the score with a single to the shortstop that scored Gardner.
Kelli Demianew retired the CU side in order in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra inning. Katie Aden crossed home plate for the winning score in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch.
McKenzie Marshall (4-1) recorded the win on the mound. She allowed three earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings. The senior scattered six strikeouts and tossed one walk. Demianew (1-5) only gave up one earned run on seven hits through seven innings. Western Oregon committed two errors and stranded 10 runners on base.
The Wolves welcome Montana State Billings (5-4) in their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener Friday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on WOUWolves.com.
