Softball Stings Yellowjackets in Sweep

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University softball team swept its Great Northwest Athletic Conference season-openers against Montana State University Billings Friday, 9-5 and 5-2.

The Wolves (9-10, 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also opened their 2014 home schedule with the victories. Bridjet Box and Kelsie Gardner both finished with three hits, including a double each. Gardner drove in a trio of runs. Melanie Pfeiffer went 2-for-4 and was walked three times. Jourdan Williams and Eryka Brill both picked up wins on the mound.

Western Oregon jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first three innings in Game 1. WOU scored a run in each of the first two innings, and then added five more in the third. Danielle Hannan hit a two RBI single to the shortstop. After scoring a run off of a wild pitch, Gardner hit a two-run double to left field. The Yellowjackets countered with five runs in the fourth inning. Raina Reece sealed the win with her second home run of the season over the left field wall.

Gardner and Reece both went 2-for-3 in the game, with Gardner recording three RBI. Brill (4-1) allowed four earned runs on six hits. Kelli Demianew grabbed her first save after pitching three shutout innings and scattering only two hits. Jessyka MacDonald (2-2) was credited with the loss. Kelsey Devlin was 2-for-4 for the Yellowjackets.

In the second game, Western Oregon scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed. A Williams RBI double capped the first three scores. After MSUB responded with one run in the fourth inning, the Wolves scored two more in the sixth. Montana State Billings' Britney Sanders hit a solo home run in the seventh.

Williams (4-1) grabbed the win after throwing six innings. She gave up two earned runs on six hits. Demianew picked up another save after closing the victory. Amanda Todd (0-4) had the loss.

Western Oregon and Montana State Billings complete their four-game series Saturday. The first pitch of third game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Live stats will be available on WOUWolves.com.
