MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University softball team finished a four-game sweep over Montana State University Billings with a pair of victories, 8-2 and 8-1, Saturday.
The Wolves (11-10, 4-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) completed their opening weekend of conference play, and their home schedule, unbeaten.
Amanda Evola was 4-for-8 at the plate and had seven RBI.
Melanie Pfeiffer was 4-for-7 and got on base five times. After recording two saves Friday,
Kelli Demianew grabbed a win on the mound after a complete-game performance.
After two scoreless innings, the Yellowjackets recorded two runs in the top of the third inning. Taylor Hoke hit a two RBI single down the right field line. WOU answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning, but all six were unearned due to committed errors by Montana State Billings. Evola tied the game with a two-RBI single through the right side.
Bridjet Box then hit a sacrifice fly to left field that drove in
Kelsie Gardner. Dani Harcourt's first triple of the season brought in three runs. Evola capped the scoring with a two-run home run, her third of the season, over the center field fence.
Demianew (2-5) gave up two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out one MSUB batter and walked another. Mary Grace Bywater (3-1) dropped her first decision on the mound this season. She gave up two earned runs on seven hits. Hoke and Aubrey Conceicao were both 2-for-3 at the plate.
Both teams had seven hits, while MSU Billings committed three of the five errors in the game. The Yellowjackets stranded six base runners to WOU's four.
In the second game,
Sammi Cadwallader (1-2) grabbed her first win of the season. She allowed one earned run on four hits through 4.2 innings.
Eryka Brill picked up her first save of the season after giving up only one hit in the final 2.1 innings. Jessica Campbell (0-1) lost her first decision of the year.
Evola continued her stellar day with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI. Pfeiffer had identical numbers in Game 2. Western Oregon committed the only error in the game, but had a 12-5 hit advantage.
Ashlie Gardner started the scoring in the second inning with a single down the left field line. It was followed by a sac fly by
Elaine Sperry that drove in
Jourdan Williams. In the following inning, Williams singled to center field and brought in
Kelsie Gardner. Evola added two runs with a double to left field in the bottom of the fourth. After MSUB (5-8, 0-4 GNAC) scored one run in the fifth, Pfeiffer hit a two-RBI double to center field. The Wolves closed the scoring with a run in the sixth.
Western Oregon welcomes Northwest Christian (1-8) in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday. The final non-conference contests of the season for the Wolves begin at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on WOUWolves.com.
