ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University softball team swept Western Oregon University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday, 8-0 and 8-6.
 
The Wildcats (23-14, 12-6 GNAC) won their third and fourth straight games and came closer to clinching a spot in the conference tournament. Central Washington's Jill McDaniels went 4-for-6 with a homerun in each game driving in a total of five runs on the day. Maria Gau got the win in Game 1 and pitched in relief in the nightcap. WOU's Jourdan Williams had three RBI and Melanie Pfeiffer finished with three hits.
 
Gau (13-6) held the Wolves to three hits in the first game five-inning shutout. She struck out six WOU batters and only walked one. Central Washington outhit Western Oregon, 11-3, in the game. Kelli Demianew (11-8) was credited with the loss.
 
In the second game, the Wolves (26-18, 14-4) got out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the second inning. The Wildcats countered with a home run in the bottom of the second and two more runs in the third inning game to tie the game at three. CWU scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away with the victory.
 
Western Oregon had 10 hits in the second game, but gave up 11 and committed four errors. Gau had the victory in the circle, while Eryka Brill (7-5) recorded the setback.
 
The Wolves travel to Saint Martin's (Wash.) for a doubleheader next Saturday. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. with live stats on WOUWolves.com.
