Softball Swept by Vikings

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Washington University softball team moved into a tie for first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a sweep at Western Oregon University, 2-1 and 6-3, Saturday.
 
The Vikings (29-11, 16-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) won their fifth and sixth straight games, and can capture the GNAC regular season title with a sweep at defending conference champion Saint Martin's (Wash.) Sunday. WOU needs a sweep over Simon Fraser (B.C.) and a Western Washington loss Sunday to claim the title and the top seed at the second annual GNAC tournament in Richland, Wash., May 1-3.
 
Amanda Evola went 2-for-7 at the plate with a pair of doubles. Kelsie Gardner was 2-for-6 and was walked once. She also had one run and is now two shy of the school record for runs scored in a single season. The Wolves broke the program record for double plays turned in a season after recording their 25th of 2014 Saturday. The 2012 team turned 24 double plays.
 
In Game 1, Jenna DeRosier and Kelli Demianew had a pitchers' duel through the first three innings. DeRosier didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, while Demianew gave up one hit in the first three innings.
 
Western Washington scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth Jordan Walley and Kali Patterson both hit RBI singles. The Wolves left runners on second and third in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Jourdan Williams singled through the right side and scored Evola.
 
DeRosier (17-3) won her 12th straight decision after allowing one earned run on five hits. She struck out three batters and walked three others. Demianew (13-9) was credited with the loss. The junior gave up two earned runs on five hits. She scattered five strikeouts and one walk.
 
Western Oregon left six runners on base, while the Vikings stranded five. WOU committed both errors in the game.
 
The Wolves (28-20, 16-6 GNAC) opened the scoring in the second game with a run in the first inning. WWU countered with three runs in the third and another in the sixth. Kaleigh Keating hit a two-RBI single in the third and an RBI double in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Danielle Harcourt's first home run scored three runs to cut the lead to one. Alexie Levin tied a seven-year-old school record with her ninth home run of the season in the seventh inning. A Taylor Clark RBI double capped the scoring.
 
Shayna Adelstein (5-5) received the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits through 5.2 innings. Aspen Ison got her first save of the season. Eryka Brill (7-6) had the loss after throwing 6.2 innings.
 
The Wolves committed two errors again, while WWU had one. The Vikings outhit WOU, 12-6. Western Washington left nine runners on base, while Western Oregon stranded six.
 
Western Oregon will honor seven seniors; Bridjet Box, Brill, Ashley Cashin, Ashlie Gardner, Danielle Hannan, Harcourt, and Melanie Pfeiffer, on Senior Day Sunday. The Wolves will look to finish a season sweep over Simon Fraser (4-33, 2-19). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
