Box Score 2 MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University softball team finished the regular season with a pair of victories over Simon Fraser University (B.C.), 9-0 and 10-2, and claimed the regular season Great Northwest Athletic Conference title Sunday.
After sweeping SFU, the Wolves (30-20, 18-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) clinched the title when Western Washington split at Saint Martin's on Sunday. It's the second regular season title in WOU program history. The 2008 Wolves also finished 18-6 en route to the conference crown. Western Oregon will be the top seed at the second annual GNAC Championships beginning Thursday in Richland, Wash.
Western Oregon's
Amanda Evola broke the program's record for most RBI in a single season Sunday. The junior went 5-for-6 at the plate and drove in five runs. She now has 48 this season, surpassing teammate,
Jourdan Williams' one-year-old record of 45. Evola has 125 in her career, which is second on the school's career list.
Kelsie Gardner set a new runs scored in a single season record also Sunday. The freshman crossed the plate four times against Simon Fraser, bringing her total to 49 this year. Tyler Sutherland had the previous record of 47 in 2009. Teammates
Melanie Pfeiffer and Evola are right behind at 47 and 46 this season.
Bridjet Box went 4-for-6 against the Clan.
Kelli Demianew and
Jourdan Williams both grabbed wins in the circle.
Western Oregon scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1. Evola hit an RBI single that scored Pfeiffer, Box had a three-RBI home run,
Ashlie Gardner had an RBI double, and Hannan also had an RBI single all in the opening inning. Williams drove in a pair of runs in the second with a double to left center. An
Ashley Cashin RBI single capped the scoring in the fourth.
Demianew (14-9) allowed no earned runs after giving up four hits. The junior struck out five Clan batters and walked none. WOU outhit Simon Fraser, 14-4. Both teams committed two errors.
In the second game, the Wolves scored all 10 of their runs in the first inning. Box
Danielle Harcourt and
Ashlie Gardner all hit two-RBI singles. Evola broke the RBI record with a grand slam over the center field fence. SFU (4-35, 2-21 GNAC) countered with a home run in the second and another run in the fifth.
Williams (6-1) tossed the final three innings and allowed one earned run on two hits.
Eryka Brill gave up no earned runs on two hits in the first two innings. WOU had an 8-4 hit advantage.
Western Oregon, the top-seed in the GNAC tournament, faces fourth-seeded Saint Martin's (26-20, 15-9) Thursday at 7 p.m. They will follow second seeded Western Washington and third-seeded Central Washington's opening game at 4:30 p.m. It's a double-elimination tournament.
