Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Oregon University softball team split its pair of games at the Tournament of Champions presented by Turlock CVB Saturday.
The Wolves (24-14) moved into the consolation bracket after going 2-3 in their five games in round robin play. On the second day of the tournament,
Amanda Evola,
Ashlie Gardner,
Melanie Pfeiffer, and
Raina Reece all went 3-for-7 at the plate. Evola and Reece both hit doubles, with Evola scoring twice.
In the first game of the day, WOU committed three errors and had five hits in a 4-3 loss to Azusa Pacific (Calif.).
Kelli Demianew's eight-game win streak on the mound came to an end with the setback. The junior allowed only one earned run on seven hits. Demianew (9-6) struck out three Cougars and threw one walk in the complete game performance.
Evola opened the scoring with a single through the right side that drove in Pfeiffer. APU evened the score in the bottom of the third with an RBI single. In the top of the fifth, an Gardner RBI groundout scored
Bridjet Box to give the Wolves the lead back. But, in the bottom half of the inning, Azusa Pacific took its first lead with a pair of runs.
Danielle Harcourt cut the lead to one run with an RBI single up the middle in the seventh that brought in
Lexi Jennings. WOU stranded a runner on first base in the seventh before falling. The Wolves left only two runners on base in the game, while APU (29-14) stranded four.
Narissa Garcia (10-5) picked up the win for the Cougars. She gave up two earned runs on three hits through five innings. Carly Xepoleas grabbed her fifth save of the season after pitching the final two innings.
Cal State-Dominguez Hills (15-28) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game. The Toros scored a run off of a double in the second inning, and two runs off of a home run in the third. In the bottom of the third, Reece drove in
Kelsie Gardner with a single and Box scored Evola on a groundout. Western Oregon scored four runs in the fifth, all off of RBI singles.
Eryka Brill (7-3) grabbed the win in the circle. She allowed three earned runs on nine hits. The Dallas, Ore. native, scattered four strikeouts and walked no batters.
The Wolves have a rematch with Cal State-Dominguez Hills in the opening game of the consolation bracket Sunday. The game begins at 9 a.m. with live stats on WOUWolves.com.
