Wolves win overtime battle against Geoducks

WOU ends D2 Shootout with first victory of the season

MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon coach Holli Howard-Carpernter is hoping Sunday's gritty overtime victory over Evergreen State College will kick-start the Wolves.

WOU needed a comeback in the final three minutes of regulation and two crucial free throws in the final second of overtime from Jordan Mottershaw for a 77-75 win Sunday in the final game of the Hampton Inn D2 Shootout at the New PE Building.

"I am really proud of the fight we showedtonight," Howard-Carpenter said."Evergreen did not back down and they really made us work for that win."

In the final minute of regulation, Michelle Bromagem nailed a 3-pointer for the lead. The visiting Geoducks hit a triple in response. Neither team found the go-ahead bucket to force overtime.

In the extra session, Western Oregon (1-3) guard Sydney Azorr scored five straight points with a layup after a Jazmin Bembry steal and a 3-pointer thanks to a Bembry helper.

Howard-Carpenter was complimentary of Bembry, the junior transfer guard, and her efforts in the second half.

"Jazmin gave us quality minutes off the bench and really showed what she can do for this team," she said.

Four straight free throws by Victoria Elleby gave the Geoducks the lead, 73-72, with 46 ticks left. Like regulation, Bromagem put the Wolves back on top with a 3-ball.

Tied with 16 second left, Mottershaw drove to the bucket and drew a foul to earn foul shots at the last second. Two swished charity shots handed the win to the Wolves.

"Our execution and willingness to share the ball down the stretch is ultimately the difference in the game," Howard-Carpenter added."We took care of the ball and knocked down big shots. Michelle and Syd were great from three point line and Jordan made great decisionstonightand hit some HUGE free throws."

Evergreen State led at the end of the first three quarters, taking an 8-point lead as their largest margin in the second quarter. Elleby had 22 points to lead the Geoducks and Uriah added 21 points.

Mottershaw scored a season-high 20 points for Western Oregon while adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Azorr made three triples as part of her 17 points and Bromagem knocked down four 3-point baskets in finishing with 14 points. Kaylie Boschma came off the bench to pull down eight rebounds in 17 minutes.

Western Oregon heads to Colorado beginning Friday for a Thanksgiving tournament hosted by Colorado Mines. On Friday, Nov. 27, WOU meets Regis University at 1 p.m. Mountain and will battle the host Orediggers on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. Mountain.
