MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon volleyball came back from a 2-0 overall deficit against Notre Dame de Namur to eventually win the match 3-2 (19-25, 25-27, 25-18, 25-15, 16-14).
In game one, the Argonauts claimed the win as they outhit the Wolves .324 to .167. Although game two had the same result, it was a back-and-forth battle ending in only a two-point loss.
Despite the fact that the Wolves were behind by two games, the momentum truly started to flow in the third. As they took the win, they were able to get a grasp of the match instead of allowing the Argonauts to take the sweep.
By the fourth set, it appeared as if it was a whole new match, and the tables were turned with the Wolves outhitting the Argonauts .406 to .086. The final set came down to the final points as the scoreboard read 14-14 near the end. It was
Alisha Bettinson's kill that would win the set and eventually the game for the Wolves.
Bettinson and
Amanda Short both led the offense with 17 kills each, while
Paige Kelsey also added 10 of her own. Additionally,
Maddie Mehciz provided offensive support with a season-high 57 assists.
Blocks played a significant role in the match as Western Oregon had 13 blocks, and Notre Dame de Namur had five. Kelsey contributed a season-high eight blocks throughout the match, and Mehciz as well as
Sydney Blankinship each contributed four.
The Wolves will face Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, September 17, at 7 p.m. in Monmouth to kick off conference play.
