WOU falls to pair of nationally-ranked teams

Volleyball opens season with losses to No. 19 CSUSB, No. 8 Colo. Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. – On the opening day of the Oredigger Volleyball Classic, Western Oregon dropped a four-set battle against No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino in the morning and fell to the tournament hosts, eighth-ranked Colorado Mines, in three sets.

The Wolves (0-2) drew two American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) preseason Top 25 squads on the tough first day. Both opponents made their respective NCAA Regionals in 2014, CSUSB in the West and CSM in the South Central.

Redshirt freshman Amanda Short and true freshman Mariella Vanderkooy led WOU with 13 kills apiece in the two matches. Vanderkooy had three service aces on the offensive side while junior libero Christie Colasurdo paced the Wolves with 33 digs.

Match One - #19 Cal State San Bernardino 3, Western Oregon 1 (11-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-25)

The Coyotes of Cal State Sam Bernardino took advantage of the Wolves hitting negative percentages in the first and fourth sets while splitting closely played games during the middle of the match to close out WOU in four games.

Western was on the ropes already trailing two games to one and down 8-3 in the third set before head coach Brad Saindon called a time out. The effects of the break lessened the CSUSB momentum and brought the Wolves within two points, 12-10. WOU erased a four-point deficit with a big rally of eight consecutive points on the serve of freshman Maddie Mehciz. Two big kills from sophomore Alisha Bettinson sparked the rally. Mehciz ended the string with a service ace that completely changed the momentum of the set. The Wolves had 12 kills in the set and limited their errors (5).

The CSUSB front line affected attacks from WOU throughout the entire match. San Bernardino had 17 more blocks (23 to six) and collectively hit to a .231 mark. Western Oregon finished with a .039 hitting percentage – 35 kills, 30 errors.

Short paced WOU with nine kills, while Vanderkooy (8) and Bettinson (7) followed right behind.

Match Two - #18 Colorado School of Mines 3, Western Oregon 0 (17-25, 18-25, 16-25)

On the Orediggers' home floor for their season debut did not help Western Oregon in an attempt for the early-season update. Colorado Mines hit over .250 in every set, including an impressive .500 mark in the third set, to knock off WOU in three sets.

Two runs for CSM extended first set leads to 10-4 and 22-14 respectively. The teams traded points until the Orediggers got the final kill for an eight-point win.

The second set played even to 14-14 before the home team rattled off four points on two kills and two WOU errors. CSM closed out a 25-18 set win taking five of the last six points played.

Each team hit their offensive stride in the third set. Western Oregon posted a match-high 11 kills while cutting errors dramatically. The problem: Colorado Mines also posted a match-best 17 kills in the third set while matching the Wolves' three errors. Western Oregon could not recover from three different three-point runs from CSM before a clean kill ended the match.

WOU newcomer Paige Kelsey led the team with eight kills and two blocks. Colorado Mines had 47 kills in three games and cashed-in five service aces.

The Wolves finish the weekend tournament with two more matches on Saturday. First, WOU meets the University of Findlay (Ohio) at 10 a.m. Mountain time and concludes their play with a 4:30 p.m. match with Minnesota State Mankato.
