WOU alum Williams makes 53-man roster in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Former Western Oregon wide receiver and track athlete Tyrell Williams has made the 53-man opening day roster for national Football League's (NFL) San Diego Chargers; made official after the club announced its final round of cuts/moves on Saturday afternoon.

Williams was one of nine rookies to make the cut and the only new Charger to come from the NCAA Division II ranks. He signed with San Diego on June 15 as an undrafted free agent.

"Tyrell has always been a hard worker with a tremendous upside," WOU head coach Arne Ferguson said. "It has amazing to see his growth from when we recruited him, into a league leading receiver in the GNAC (Great Northwest Athletic Conference), and now in the NFL."

6788The Salem, Ore. Native was a four-time All-GNAC selection and holds the school record with 165 receptions. During his WOU career, Williams had 2,792 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns.

Williams not only starred on the gridiron, but was the 200-meter champion at the 2014 GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Ferguson credited Matt Overlin and Miguel Gonzalez from the football staff, track and field head coach Mike Johnson, and WOU strength and conditioning coach Cori Metzgar for their efforts in Williams' development.

"He is a great example of the WOU family," Ferguson added. "I am very proud of Tyrell. His success speaks highly of Western Oregon and the GNAC."

Williams will be in uniform when the Chargers kick off the 2015 NFL regular season on Sunday, Sept. 13 at home against the Detroit Lions.
