Wolves fall in triple OT to San Francisco State

Western Oregon falls for first time at home in 17 games

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Ali Faruq-Bey led five Western Oregon players in double figures totaling 21 points with eight rebounds, but a 16-game winning streak inside the New P.E. Building was snapped as San Francisco State defeated the Wolves 99-93 in triple overtime in day one's nightcap game at the WOU/Doubletree by Hilton D2 Shootout.

Bryan Berg registered 15 points, Buster Souza scored a career-high 14 while Tanner Omlid and Demetrius Trammell each finished with 10 for the Wolves (2-1).

San Francisco State (3-0) built a 16-point lead in the second half, but not secure the victory until outscoring WOU in the third overtime, 9-3.

A.J. Khalon totaled a monster double-double on the night with 18 points (9-12 FG, 10-12 FT) and 23 rebounds, the most allowed to a single player since the 2013-14 season. The Gators also received 23 points off the bench from Warren Jackson and 14 more in a reserve role from Derrick Brown.

Playing in their first home game since the 2016 NCAA West Regional Final, the Wolves trailed at the half by six and saw the Gators hold a 10-point lead at the 6:31 mark of the second half. Western Oregon closed regulation on a 13-3 run. Souza banked one home while a triple from Evan Garrison sliced the lead to five. After a Brown 3-ball for the Gators, the Wolves scored the last eight points, including a Berg jumper on the right elbow to force overtime.

San Francisco State scored the first four points of the first overtime period and led by as many as seven, 73-66, midway through the OT period. Faruq-Bey led an 8-2 rally with a bucket and two charity shots. Facing a two-point deficit with 13 seconds on the clock, Faruq-Bey scored on a drive to add five more overtime minutes to the clock.

The Wolves got out to the early advantage in the second overtime with a Berg triple and jumper from Faruq-Bey to lead 84-80. It was the Gators who climbed back in the lead with a Kahlon layup after a steal for a 90-89 lead with three seconds left. Looking for room up the middle of the floor, Faruq-Bey was fouled near the half-court stripe and went to the line with 1.6 ticks left. The junior made the first to tie the game at 90-90 but missed on the potential game-winner forcing the third OT.

Khalon scored seven of the Gators' nine points in the third overtime to seal the road victory.

In all, San Francisco State held Western Oregon to 35.2 percent shooting from the floor and 26.7 percent from behind the 3-point arc. WOU bested the battle of the boards, 53-51, but were forced into 21 turnovers.

Western Oregon returns to action against UC San Diego (4-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the first meeting since last March in the regional final.
