MONMOUTH, Ore. – Junior forward
Tanner Omlid finished with 19 points, senior
Yanick Kulich added 13 points while both flirted with double-doubles.
Ali Faruq-Bey chipped in 12 points as the trio led Western Oregon past Concordia-Portland, 80-70, on Tuesday night at the New P.E. Building.
Omlid, Kulich and Faruq-Bey accounted for 22 of Western Oregon's 43 points in the second half as the Wolves (4-3, 1-0 GNAC) never trailed and held off numerous Concordia (2-4, 0-1 GNAC) runs after the break.
Moments after the Cavaliers pulled within one at 7-6, Omlid hit on three shots including a dunk and Faruq-Bey found the basket off the glass for an 8-0 run.
Demetrius Trammell and
Evan Garrison connected on 3-pointers for a 25-15 lead.
A Kulich layup at the 4:48 mark pushed the lead to 14 (33-19), but the Cavs responded with an 11-4 closing run to put the halftime score at 37-31.
The Wolves saw Concordia trim the lead to three on six times over the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Western Oregon responded with triples from
Bryan Berg and Trammell followed by an Omlid assist in an 11-3 run to retake a double-digit lead.
The Wolves sealed the game with interior buckets and late 3-pointers from Kulich and
Malik Leaks.
Omlid ended the night one rebound short of a double-double while Kulich was three boards shy. Omlid had five assists, four steals and two blocked shot with 7 of 14 shooting. Kulich finished 6 of 9 from the floor with his first make of the year from behind the arc.
Western Oregon shot a season-best 51.6 percent (32-62) and tallied 10 long-distance makes. The Wolves outrebounded the Cavaliers on the night, 34-31.
Latrell Wilson led four Cavalier players in double figures with 16 points while Christopher Edwards pulled down 13 rebounds.
Western Oregon has a quick turn-around, as they head down to Eugene on Wednesday to face No. 23 Oregon at 7 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena.
