Wolves pick up 69-60 road win at Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif. – After a pair of losses away from home earlier in the non-conference schedule, the Western Oregon women's basketball team secured its first road win of the season Saturday evening as the Wolves defeated Humboldt State, 69-60, behind 23 points and nine rebounds from junior Shelby Snook.

"Shelby had a great night," Western Oregon head coach Holly Howard-Carpenter said. "She was focused on one thing and that was to get this win.

Snook, playing her first game against the Lumberjacks as a member of WOU, put together her best scoring effort since her 31-point showing in the first GNAC win of the year. Snook sank 5-of-8 3-pointers and 8-of-13 shots overall to lead three Western Oregon players in double figures. Sydney Azorr scored 13 points and had seven rebounds in her first start of the season. Kaylie Boschma added 13 points joining Azorr shooting 5-of-11 from the field.

"Kaylie gave us great energy, especially in the first quarter," Howard-Carpenter said. "Although we aren't back to a full squad, it was nice to have three in double digits and to have Syd(ney) back in the lineup."

The Wolves (5-4 overall) shot 46.4 percent from the field compared to 33.9 percent by Humboldt State (2-9), as the rebounders did a nice job of cleaning up the glass to a 37-34 advantage for the night.

Humboldt led for most of the first quarter before went on a 6-0 run to take its first lead at 12-9. A Snook triple early in the second quarter extended the lead to seven, 25-18. Humboldt State reeled off seven straight including a 3-pointer to tie the game at 25-25.

Western Oregon flipped the energy of the quarter, and ultimately the game, with a 14-0 run over the next 5:08. Boschma started the run with a wide-open 3-ball off a crisp pass from Tori Cambra. Snook followed with a deep make, Kennedy Corrigan connected on a baseline jumper, and Snook closed the run scoring five of the next six points to make it a 39-25 lead. A late bucket from HSU put the score at 39-38 at the break.

"Kedy was solid tonight and we have to have that kind of contribution from the bench each night in order to compete in the GNAC," Howard-Carpenter said.

The Wolves continued to lead by double-figures in the third quarter, holding a 19-point cushion with an Azorr lay-in in the final minute. Humboldt State chipped away winning the fourth quarter by seven points. The Lumberjacks held WOU without a field goal over the final 3:46, but the Wolves' lead was insurmountable.

Humboldt State was led on the night by a 6-of-11 performance from behind the arc from Catherine Rees, who finished with 20 points.

"Humboldt is a tough place to play and they are a scrappy team that kept hitting big shot after big shot in the second half," Howard-Carpenter said.

Western Oregon will take 12 days off before returning to action on the road at Simon Fraser on Thursday, Dec. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from SFU's West Gy.
