BURNABY, B.C. – Three Western Oregon women's basketball players each scored 10 points, but four scored in double figures as host Simon Fraser got past the Wolves 71-57 on Thursday night.
Â
The backcourt of Elisa Homer and Ellen Kett combined for 38 points leading the Clan to their 11
th win of the season.
Â
Savannah Heugly led Western Oregon (5-5, 1-2 GNAC) with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. She reached double figures for the fifth time this season.
Ali Nelke returned to the starting lineup after missing two games to score 10 points while pulling down five rebounds.
Sydney Azorr rounded out the WOU 10-point trio going 3-of-7 from the floor.
"Ali played great tonight," head coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "She always does the dirty work and defends their bigs but tonight she was aggressive and really helped us on the offensive end."Â
The Wolves were able to trim an 11-point SFU lead with a 10-2 run over the closing 2:56 of the first quarter.
Shelby Snook began the rally with a layup followed by a 3-pointer from
Kaylie Boschma.
Kory Oleson tallied the final five points with two free throws and a 3-ball to make the score 20-17 in favor of SFU after the first quarter.
"Kory was a nice spark off the bench as well, her shot is looking great and she is playing with confidence," Howard-Carpenter said.
Snook's triple tied the game at the 7:47 mark of the second quarter. But Simon Fraser went on a 15-4 scoring run to build an 11-point halftime lead, 39-28.
Â
The Clan maintained a double-digit lead for all but three possessions in the second half. Kett's nine-point effort in the fourth quarter kept a WOU comeback out of reach.
Â
Western Oregon shot 46.8 percent (22-47) for the game and bested the Clan in field-goal percentage. Simon Fraser turned 18 offensive rebounds and 17 WOU turnovers into 17 additional field goal attempts. The Clan hit 26 overall shots on the night with seven coming from behind the arc.
"We started out fairly solid tonight but allowed them way too many second opportunities with offensive rebounds and turnovers,"  Howard-Carpenter said. "They are a talented team and tough match up and we can't give teams like that nearly twenty more attempts to score. Shooting 50% from the line hurt us as well, especially late in the 4th when it was only a ten point game."
The Wolves close out 2016 with a 4:30 p.m. game against Western Washington on Saturday at Whatcom Community College.
