Wolves Fall to Vikings, 86-65

Snook nets 16 leading three in double figures

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Junior Shelby Snook scored 16 points in Western Oregon's 86-65 loss to Western Washington on Saturday at Whatcom Pavilion.
 
Snook added six assists, three rebounds and a blocked shot. Junior Sydney Azorr recorded 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added two assists. Sophomore Kaylie Boschma added 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
 
Western Washington (9-3, 3-1 GNAC) controlled the game from the opening tip, starting the game on a 7-0 run that extended into a 16-2 lead. The Wolves struggled to get shots to fall in the first quarter, going 3-of-16 from the floor. Boschma had four points for the Wolves (5-6, 1-3 GNAC) in the opening period as the Vikings kept the pressure on and led 27-6 after the first.
 
Taylor Peacocke posted a solid performance for Western Washington, finishing with 29 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Tia Briggs added 11 points for the Vikings.
 
Western Washington continued to press toward the hoop during the second stanza. The Vikings used eight points in the paint and hit 7-of-11 free throws to take a 49-24 lead into halftime. Boschma led WOU with 11 points in the first half.
 
During the third period, Western Oregon kicked up their energy and focus outscoring the hosts 22-14. Snook led the Wolves with nine points and three assists while Azorr chipped in five points during six minutes on the floor. The teams played even in the paint with eight points each, but WOU turned three offensive rebounds into four second-chance points.
 
Western Oregon cut the WWU advantage down to 17 points twice in the early minutes of the fourth. Azorr hit a 3-pointer and followed with a jumper on the next possession, both assisted by Snook. WWU shot 56.3 percent in the final quarter to keep its double-digit advantage strong.
 
The Wolves will play their only home games during a 35-day stretch next week hosting No. 8 Alaska Anchorage at the New P.E. Building on Thursday, Jan. 5 (7 p.m.) and Alaska on Saturday, Jan. 7 (2 p.m.).
