STORYLINES
  • Top-ranked Western Oregon returns to the New P.E. Building to host Western Washington on Thursday, Feb. 11 and Simon Fraser on Saturday, Feb. 13. Thursday's game against the Vikings will be the annual RED OUT game. Tip time for both games is 7 p.m. Pacific.
  • Last time out: The Wolves went 2-0 last weekend during its trip to the Puget Sound region of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. After trailing for just the second time this season, WOU outscored Saint Martin's 40-27 in the second half leading to a 74-62 win in Lacey. Four players scored in double figures led by the 19-point, eight-rebound effort from Andy Avgi. Julian Nichols added 17 points and seven rebounds. On Saturday night, WOU rallied from its largest halftime deficit of the year to defeat nationally ranked Seattle Pacific, 84-82, in overtime. Western Oregon tied the game on an Avgi 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation. Another triple from Jordan Wiley gave the Wolves a lead they would not relinquish. Avgi led all scorers with 29 points, Wiley had 17, Tanner Omlid had 16 points and Julian Nichols chipped in 10 points.
  • WOU has won 11 straight games after a two-game skid late in December (at Oregon, at CWU).
 
ABOUT WESTERN OREGON
  • Andy Avgi leads the team in scoring at 22.1 points per game while shooting .581 from the floor. In 12 GNAC games, his scoring average is 23.2 points per game.
  • Western Oregon's balanced scoring attack, including Avgi, has six players average between 9.2 and 22.1 points per game. Tanner Omlid and Avgi lead the Wolves in rebounding with 5.4 boards a contest while Devon Alexander, at 4.7 rpg, follows just behind. Julian Nichols is second in the GNAC averaging 4.8 assists.
  • Double-digit scoring streaks: Andy Avgi has scored 10 or more points in 13 straight games. Julian Nichols' string currently sits at five games and Julian Nichols has hit double figures in five of his last six.
  • The Wolves taketh, but rarely giveth: WOU is the GNAC leader in turnover margin at +5.41 per game. WOU forces 14.8 turnovers per game, the second highest mark in the league. Individually, Julian Nichols tops the conference with a +3.2 assist/turnover ratio.
  • Devon Alexander has both WOU double-doubles this season: 12 points/10 rebounds on Nov. 21 against Warner Pacific and 19 points/11 rebounds against Montana State Billings on Dec. 5.
  • Head coach Jim Shaw is in his first season at WOU. His previous assistant coaching stops include Saint Mary's, Washington, Oklahoma, Portland, Montana State, Southern Utah, Oregon State, Chemeketa and Idaho State.
  • Western Oregon was picked to finish second in the GNAC regular season title by the league's coaches receiving four of 11 possible first-place votes.
 
ABOUT WESTERN WASHINGTON
  • Head coach Tony Dominguez is in his fourth year at WWU. He has an 85-31 overall record while his teams are 49-19 in league play.
  • The Vikings had a four-game winning streak ended last week with a pair of home losses against Alaska Anchorage and Alaska. WWU erased a 17-point deficit in the second half to force overtime, but fell in a second extra session, 108-105. Kyle Impero had 37 points in the loss. WWU was held to a season-low 36.4 percent from the floor in Saturday's 76-64 loss to the Nanooks. Ricardo Maxwell had 16 points for the Vikings.
  • Western Washington is led in scoring by four players in double figures: Jeffrey Parker (17.7), Ricardo Maxwell (16.0), Kyle Impero (15.5) and Trey Drechsel (11.0)
  • WWU is shooting .474 from the field, .364 from 3-point range and .731 from the foul line.
 
ABOUT SIMON FRASER
  • SFU alum Virgil Hill is in his first season as head coach.
  • The Clan are 1-19 overall and winless in GNAC play (0-14). Last week, SFU dropped two games at home: falling by 10, 78-68, to Alaska and 86-66 to Alaska Anchorage 74-71.
  • Max Barkeley leads the Clan averaging 15.6 points per game. Three others join Barkeley in double figures per game – Michael Harper (14.1), Oshea Gairey (12.5) and JJ Pankratz (10.0).
  • Simon Fraser allows 84.9 points per game. Their scoring offense is at 70.2 points per game while shooting .408 from the field, .314 from behind the arc and .718 from the free-throw line.
