Wolves Outlast SPU Behind Omlid's 34

Career night aids WOU to third GNAC win

SEATTLE – Tanner Omlid totaled a career-high 34 points and added seven rebounds to lead Western Oregon (6-7, 3-2 GNAC) past host Seattle Pacific, 76-74, on Thursday night at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

The junior forward from Monmouth hit 13-of-22 total shots from the night, including five makes from behind the 3-point line, to become the Wolves' first 30-point performer since Andy Avgi went for 34 against Western Washington on Feb. 11, 2016. Omlid filled out the stat sheet with three blocks, two assists and two steals.

Ali Faruq-Bey scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half and grabbed four rebounds.

Leading by two at the half, 42-40, Omlid buried a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 run. He followed with a driving lay-in on the next possession and Faruq-Bey's jump shot gave WOU a 53-44 cushion with 13:46 to play, and the Wolves never trailed in the second half.

After Seattle Pacific got a long triple from Will Parker, Faruq-Bey hit one of two free throws to push WOU's margin to two points with 16 seconds left. SPU pushed the ball into the frontcourt and called time. With 2.9 seconds on the clock, a sideline pass found Coleman Wooten who fired a 3-point try from the right wing. The shot caromed off the back of the rim to ensure the road win for the Wolves.

Eight different players scored on the night for Western Oregon. Buster Souza had seven points in 12 minutes. Demetrius Trammell had five rebounds.

Seattle Pacific (6-7, 2-3 GNAC) led the majority of Thursday's first half, extending its cushion to as many as 10 points – 31-21 – on consecutive 3-pointers from Joe Rasmussen at the 7:15 mark. WOU responded with a 10-1 run. Isaiah Edwards connected on a jumper and Omlid hit from behind the arc. Souza slammed one home before Edwards sank his first triple of the season to cut SPU's lead to 32-31.

After back-to-back SPU misses from deep late in the half, Omlid scored the final five points to give WOU the halftime lead.

Thursday's win pushed WOU's record under head coach Jim Shaw to 4-0 against Seattle Pacific by a combined margin of 11 points.

Western Oregon returns to action against Saint Martin's in Marcus Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 7. Game time is 7:30 p.m. with coverage on WOUWolves.com/Live.
