MONMOUTH, Ore.—Registering a 75 percent side out percentage, No. 8-ranked Western Washington won its 11th straight match with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-15) victory at Western Oregon University on Thursday night.
Western Washington improved to 18-3 on the season and 12-1 in GNAC action. Nine of WWU's last 11 wins and each of the last five matches have been in sweeping fashion.
Western Oregon fell to 6-14 overall and 2-11 in conference play following the match. The Wolves will return to action on Saturday with an afternoon match against Simon Fraser University. Opening serve is set for 2 p.m.
The Vikings jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opener with Joellee Buckner contributing with a pair of early kills. Bucker returned with another strike to make it a 14-7 as WWU continued to double-up the home side for the 25-12 win.
In the second, an
Alisha Bettinson swing kept the Wolves within a point at 5-4 before back-to-back terminations by Michaela Hall extended WWU's advantage.
Western Oregon scored the first three points in the third with
Sianna DeCarli and
Katherine Huntington recording kills and stayed within striking distance at 14-11 on a
Libbie Hoene ace. Turning to its defense, the Vikings closed out the match, however, by holding WOU to a .070 hitting percentage in the finale.
Bucker ended the night with a match-high 12 kills while Hall finished with 11 kills against one error for a sparkling .588 hitting percentage.
Bettinson led WOU with 11 kills and was followed by DeCarli (6) and
Jenna Compton (3).
