MONMOUTH, Ore.—With three different players tallying nine kills in the match, Simon Fraser University defeated Western Oregon University, 3-0 () in GNAC volleyball action on Saturday afternoon inside the New P.E. Building.
Simon Fraser outhit Western Oregon, .241 to .047, in the match to move back to .500 on the season with an 11-11 overall record. With three weeks remaining in the regular season, the Clan reside in fifth place in the GNAC standings with an 8-6 mark. WOU fell to 6-15 overall and 2-12 in conference play with the loss.
WOU will next take the court at home on Tuesday for a Halloween match against Concordia. Opening serve against the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m.
Western Oregon opened the match with a 4-1 spree as
Myla Norvell turned in an ace,
Jenna Compton a kill and the duo of
Alisha Bettinson and
Katherine Huntington blocking a SFU attack.
The Clan, however, scored six straight points from that point and did not relinquish the lead for the opening set win. SFU never trailed in the second set and used a seven-point run in the third to overcome WOU's early advantage.
Bettinson led all players with 13 kills while Kirsten Pinkney, Christine Howlett and Betsie de Beer shared SFU's team-high with nine kills each. Bettinson added 12 digs, one shy of team-leader
Libbie Hoene. Overall, SFU topped the Wolves 66 to 52 in total digs with Jayme Bratsburg coming through with a match-high 18 digs.
