Wolves set scoring record in win over SFU

BURNABY, B.C.—Behind a school-record tying six touchdown passes by senior quarterback Nick Duckworth, Western Oregon University defeated Simon Fraser University, 82-21, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Duckworth tossed five of his six touchdowns in the first half alone as Western Oregon (2-4, 1-3 GNAC) generated a 44-14 lead at the break. Duckworth now shares the school record with former Wolf Ryan Bergman, who set the mark against Dixie State on Sept. 21, 2013.

Keoni Piceno and Paul Revis each had three total touchdowns with Revis on the receiving end of three Duckworth scoring tosses and Piceno catching two separate 56-yard TDs and scoring his third on a return after a SFU blocked punt.

The 82 points shattered a WOU NCAA DII era (since 2000) record with the previous high a 66-point output at home against Dixie State on Oct. 13, 2012.

Piceno totaled 112 yards on the two long catches in the first half. Revis scored his three touchdowns on five catches and totaled 69 yards on the day. Blaise Manabe also hauled in a pair of long catches with 81 yards total on just two receptions. Caleb Tingstad caught one pass for 12 yards and the final Duckworth touchdown.

Averaging over 10 yards per carry, Taylor Poyadue led the ground attack with 13 rushes for 131 yards. Poyadue, Devon Fortier and Phillip Fenumiai all had rushing touchdowns in the game.

Bo Highburger and Joey Roos were the most active defensive players with Highburger leading the team with 11 tackles and Roos next up with seven stops. Both players forced a fumble while Roos came through for the block punt early in the first quarter to make it a 14-0 spread.

The Wolves' final scored occurred on an interception with Trebial Larry scampering 55 yards to the end zone with 4:10 to play.

SFU scored single touchdowns in the first, second and fourth quarters. Its opening score came on a 99-yard kickoff return following WOU's score on the blocked punt.

Overall, WOU outgained SFU in yards, 604-to-248.

The Wolves will return to action next week by hosting Central Washington University (6-0, 4-0 GNAC). The Wildcats held off a late WOU rally for a 30-23 win in the first meeting between the two teams on Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. at McArthur Field.
