Wolves Notch Season Sweep of Saints

Big first-quarter run sustains WOU in 73-61 win

LACEY, Wash. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team used an 18-1 first-quarter run to take control Thursday night, as the Wolves open their final weekend road trip with a 73-61 win over Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.

Junior Shelby Snook led the Wolves in scoring with 14 points while adding four assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Kaylie Boschma was 5-of-10 from the field recording 12 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Junior Jasmine Miller was the third WOU player in double figures with 11 points while adding a career-high six assists. Junior Sydney Azorr finished with a game-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points.

"Tonight was a great team win," WOU head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter. "We came out with great energy and pushed the tempo.  Everyone contributed and they buckled down on defense when Saint Martin's tried to close the gap.  I'm really proud of how we handled their runs, we did a good job answering tonight."

As a team, the Wolves shot 49 percent from the floor (24-for-29), and held Saint Martin's to 32.3 percent shooting (21-for-65). Western Oregon held a 39-35 advantage in rebounds and had 16 assists on their 24 made field goals.

After spotting the host Saints to a 4-0 lead, Western Oregon went on their early run to go up by 13 just past midway through the first quarter. The Wolves' defense clamped down during the stretch, allowing one free throw and a lay-up as WOU would take 28-11 advantage into the second period after shooting  76.9 percent as a squad (10-of-13).

An early 3-pointer by Azorr three minutes into the second quarter extended the lead to 20, 33-13. SMU would battle back to pull within 11 late in the half, but an Azorr free-throw make put the Wolves ahead 36-24 heading into the locker room. Snook led Western Oregon with nine first-half points while Miller and Azorr each had six.

Saint Martin's trimmed the lead to 10 at the 8-17 mark of the third quarter, but Western Oregon scored six straight in response and close the quarter on a 4-0 run to take an 18-point lead heading into the closing frame. The Wolves would remain in control never seeing their advantage dip below 10 points, taking the win by 12.

Nine of the 10 Western Oregon player in the contest scored at least two points.

"Sydney played great defense on their ball handlers and set the tone for us defensively," Howard-Carpenter added. "Shelby and Kennedy did a really nice job pushing the ball and that helped us get going early.  Kaylie ran the floor with a sense of urgency and she earned her baskets tonight. Kory gave us great minutes tonight and knocked down a huge three to stop a Saint Martin's run.  We all had our moments tonight and it was fun to watch."

Western Oregon returns to the floor for the final time on Saturday afternoon for a matchup at Seattle Pacific. That game will tip-off at 2 p.m. from Royal Brougham Pavilion.
