Softball Travels to Billings, Opens GNAC Play

With two weeks to prepare, WOU starts league with four games at MSUB

MONMOUTH, Ore. – After a much-anticipated wait that included last weekend's washout, the Western Oregon softball team opens travel to Montana to finally open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play facing Montana State Billings in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday, March 18-19 at Avitus Group Stadium. The Wolves-Yellowjackets matchup will feature live stats and video on WOUWolves.com/Live.
 
ABOUT WESTERN OREGON:
  • The Wolves are 38 wins away from 750 as a program (since 1985).
  • Offensively, the Wolves have shined over the first 15 games of the season averaging 6.36 runs per game, ranked 30th in Division II. WOU has outscored its opponents 100-56 scoring 23 first-inning runs and 21 runs in the fourth inning.
  • The pitching staff has combined to post the 79th best ERA in Division II at 2.69 … Haley Fabian has thrown the most innings thus far with 34 1/3, posting a 304 record and 3.87 ERA … Sammi Cadwallader is 4-0 on the year with two solo shutouts. Her 1.75 ERA is second on the team while allowing just 19 hits in 28 innings … Lizzet Dominguez has the team's lowest ERA at 1.11 in 12 2/3 innings of work … Chandler Bishop is 2-2 in six appearances, including a pair of starts, with a 2.95 ERA.
  • After going hitless in the season opener, Kelsie Gardner has hit safely in 14 straight games including five two-hit and three three-hit games. She is the team's leader hitting .455 with 25 hits and seven stolen bases.
  • Destiny Kuehl is hitting .426 and leads Western Oregon with 16 runs batted in and is tied with Ashlee Lynch, Emma Alfonso and Zoe Clark with three home runs each. Kuehl and Lynch have each reach safely in 11 straight games.
  • Lynch, hitting .412, had a five-RBI game against the College of Idaho on Feb. 26 that included a grand slam. She is the only WOU player to have more than three RBI in a game this year.
  • In total, seven Western Oregon players are hitting above .300 on the season.
  • Three Wolves have earned GNAC Player of the Week honors thus far – Destiny Kuehl (Player, Feb. 20), Ashlee Lynch (Player, Feb. 27) and Sammi Cadwallader (Pitcher, Feb. 27).
  
ROAD WARRIORS, PART TWO:
  • Beginning with the weekend trip to Billings, the Wolves will play their next 14 games away from Monmouth. Next weekend, WOU plays at Central Washington and Saint Martin's (March 25-26) before heading to the Tournament of Champions, sponsored by the City of Turlock from March 31-April 2 against six teams from the PacWest and the CCAA.
  • Western Oregon went 9-6 during its 15-game stretch on the road to start the season. The Wolves went 2-3 in the Las Vegas Desert Stinger Classic. After dropping two to Hawaii Pacific, WOU has won six of their last seven with doubleheader sweeps of Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii while taking three out of four games in a non-league tilt at the College of Idaho.
 
WOLVES vs. MSUB:
  • Western Oregon and MSU Billings have played 56 times prior to this year with each team holding distinct advantages on their home fields. The Wolves are 20-6 in true home games, including sweeping a three-game set from MSUB last April, compared to just 6-14 in road games against the Yellowjackets. During the last trip to Billings in 2015, the teams split a short two-game set with WOU winning 4-1 in the opener.
 
SCOUTING THE YELLOWJACKETS:
  • Montana State Billings holds a 9-16 record entering the week, going 5-7 so far in the GNAC after being swept by Saint Martin's last weekend. The Yellowjackets are hitting .288 as a team with 27 home runs. Heather Tracy leads the team with a .473 average to go with two triples, three homers and 23 RBI. Cameron Cassinelli and Kelsey Devlin are climbing up the MSUB all-time home run list each with seven homers. Maddy Lincoln is 6-7 with a 5.27 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings, while Megan Dettling is 3-7 with a 7.32 ERA.
