APU pulls away in fourth to top Wolves

GLENDORA, Calif.—Powered by 31 points in the second half, including 24 in the fourth quarter alone, Azusa Pacific University defeated Western Oregon University, 48-17, in GNAC football action on Saturday evening at Citrus Stadium.

Western Oregon  (1-4, 0-3 GNAC) tied the game early in the third quarter on a 7-yard Phillip Fenumiai touchdown run, but the Wolves went scoreless the rest of the way while Azusa Pacific (3-2, 2-0 GNAC) posted 31 unanswered points to seal the victory.

The Wolves scored the game's first points by as Caleb Tingstad capped a five-play, 72-yard drive early in the first with a 5-yard rush up the middle.

Azusa Pacific got on the board late in the quarter with a 38-yard field goal and soon captured the lead via a 59-yard scamper by Kurt Scoby midway through the second quarter.

Andrew Elffers delivered a 10-yard strike to Weston Carr for a 17-7 advantage, but WOU kept the game to within a single score at the break as Adrian Saldana uncorked a 49-yard field goal with 22 seconds to play in the half.

Fenumiai's run knotted the game at 17-17 with 7:31 to play in the third, but with the next three WOU drives ending in a punt, the Cougars steadily pulled away over the final 15 minutes.

Both teams had successful days in the ground game as APU averaged 5.9 yards per carry on 34 attempts and WOU 5.5 yards per carry on 29 rushes. Scoby led all backs with 161 yards on 14 carries for a robust 11.5 yards per carry average.

The Cougars, however, finished with the advantage in the aerial attack with Elffers throwing for 262 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Nick Duckworth ended the game completing 17-of-38 passes for 175 yards with three attempts picked off by the Cougar defense. Taylor Poyadue led WOU with 46 yards on nine carries. Aided by a 39-yard dash in the first, Keoni Piceno delivered 44 yards on just two attempts.

In a battle of top wide outs in the GNAC, APU's Carr caught 11 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Paul Revis hauled in nine catches for 101 yards and now has 59 receptions and 661 yards in five games this season.
