BELLINGHAM, Wash.—Held to a season-low .032 hitting percentage, Western Oregon University fell in straight sets (25-11, 25-17, 25-14) to No. 10-ranked Western Washington University on Saturday night.
Western Washington improved to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the GNAC. Meanwhile, Western Oregon dropped to 5-8 on the season and 1-5 in league contests.
The Wolves never got into rhythm against the national power as the Vikings jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first and never looked back.
Western Oregon managed a brief 6-5 lead in the second set following a
Mariella Vandenkooy kill and later extended the lead to two points via an
Alisha Bettinson solo block, but following a WWU timeout, the hoe side recovered and pulled away with a 10-1 spree to lock up a 2-0 advantage.
Balanced at 8-8 in the third, the Vikings once again flexed its defensive abilities by forcing seven WOU attacking errors en route to the 25-14 win in the finale to finish the sweep.
Vandenkooy led all WOU players with 10 kills.
Libbie Hoene registered 19 digs, one shy of a career high.
Abby Phelps paced WWU with a match0high 11 kills.
WOU will now travel to face Concordia on Tuesday for a midweek match in Portland. Opening serve against the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m. The Wolves will close out the week with a home match against Montana State Billings on Saturday, Oct. 7 with a 2 p.m. scheduled start time.
