Box Score BURNABY, B.C.—Using a pair of double-digit kill performances, Simon Fraser defeated Western Oregon 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-20) in GNAC volleyball action on Saturday evening.
Western Oregon (6-19, 3-15 GNAC) dug themselves into a 5-0 hole in the opening set but managed to fight back and tie the game at 10-10 on a
Morgan Haskett kill. WOU went on to secure two brief one-point leads, the second via another Haskett kill for a 13-12 advantage.
Simon Fraser (13-11, 10-8 GNAC), however, compiled a 6-1 run to reestablish its buffer and continue on to the four-point win.
Forcing WOU into a -.049 hitting percentage, SFU's defense set the tone in the second set and helped create a 2-0 overall lead in the match.
The Wolves played their best volleyball in the final set and nearly stole a win with a late rally. The two teams battled to 10 ties in the finale. After a tie at 15-1, SFU created a small gap at 19-16 but the Wolves retaliated with four of the next five points, including back-to-back kills by
Sierra Stultz, to knot the set at 20-20.
Forced into a timeout, SFU regrouped and snared the next five points to clinch the match.
SFU outhit WOU .256 to .068 with Tessa May blasting a match-high 16 kills. Teammate Kirsten Pinkney added 11 terminations for the Clan.
Stultz ended the match with a team-high seven kills for the Wolves and was followed by four each from Haskett,
Sianna DeCarli and
Descinda Slaughter.
Freshman
Aubrey Stanton paced the team with 14 assists while Slaughter reached for a team-high 13 digs.
The Wolves will close out the season with two more road matches, including a mid-week affair at Concordia on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Opening serve against the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m. in Portland.
The team's final contest of the season will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Montana State Billings with a 2 p.m. start.
