HONOLULU, Hawai'i — The Western Oregon men's basketball team opened the Hoops in Hawai'i DII Power Invitational with a wire-to-wire win over Emmanuel College, 76-64 on Sunday at the Hawai'i Convention Center.
Western Oregon (8-1) led by as many as 13 in the first half, establishing their 3-point shooting early. WOU attempted 18 shots from deep before the break to the just six attempts for Emmanuel College (6-5).
Riley Hawken led the attack, going 3-for-5 from three while leading all scorers with 15 points in the first half. Hawken also contributed 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in his second double-double of the season. The junior forward finished the game with a career-high 23 points, eclipsing the 20-point barrier for the second time this year and making it six straight games in double figures.
Brandon Simpson hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to pull the Lions within seven heading into the locker room. His 25 points and 14 rebounds were both game-highs.
Austin Greene scored the first five points of the second half for Emmanuel College, getting them within four points on multiple occasions, but Western Oregon shot 58.6% from the field after the break to put the game out of reach.
Kaleb Warner scored all 13 of his points in the second half, playing 19 minutes in the period. He also pulled in six rebounds and four assists in the game.
Dalven Brushier proved the most efficient shooter of the night, going 8-for-10 from the field for a season-high 20 points. It was the fifth time this season he has shot 50% or better from 3-point range, accumulating an impressive 51.5% (17-33) mark from three on the year.
Next up in the eight-team tournament for WOU is a matchup with the winner of Hawai'i Pacific and UC San Diego. The Wolves will play in the semifinal Monday, Dec. 17 with an anticipated tipoff at 10 p.m. PST.
