HONOLULU—Hitting 9-of-15 from 3-point territory in the second half, No. 7-ranked UC San Diego topped Western Oregon University, 73-63, to advance to the championship game of the Hoops in Hawaii D2 Power Invitational on Monday night.
With the win, UC San Diego moved to 10-1 on the season and will play Chaminade University in the championship contest on Tuesday. Having its five-game winning streak snapped, Western Oregon (8-2) fell for just the second time this season and will face Dallas Baptist in the third-place match tomorrow evening. Opening tip against the Patriots is set for 5:45 p.m. (HST).
Falling behind 13-5 early in the first half, Western Oregon compiled a 14-2 run for its largest lead of the game. Hitting a pair of 3-pointers and adding a make from the free throw line, freshman
Cameron Cranston provided seven of the team's points during the team's stretch for a 19-15 advantage.
A
Darius Lubom layup pushed WOU's lead to six (23-17) with 4:15 to play in the opening half but the Tritons doubled their scoring total over the final four minutes to reverse the deficit and stake a 35-29 lead at the break.
Turning to their defense, UC San Diego held the Wolves to just one made basket, a 3-pointer by
Kaleb Warner, over the first few minutes of the second half to extend the gap to as many as 12 points (46-34) at the 16:12 mark.
Boosted by 3-pointers by four different players, the Wolves outscored UCSD 22-12 over the next 10 minutes of play to pull within a single possession (58-56), but their comeback hopes were stalled on the ensuing possession as Chris Hansen drilled a momentum-changing 3-pointer for the Tritons.
UCSD closed out the game by connecting on four of its final five attempts from the floor, including 3-of-3 from deep. In addition, the Tritons were 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final minutes to help clinch the double-digit win.
Shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and finishing with a team-high 12 points, Cranston became the eighth different player to lead WOU in scoring this season. Lubom (11 points) and
Riley Hawken (10 points) also reached double figures for the Wolves.
UCSD's Tyrell Roberts led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting.
Despite the scoring swings in the contest, both teams kept care of the ball while on offense with UCSD committing just six turnovers against eight for the Wolves.
