MONMOUTH, Ore.—Six games are in the books at the NCAA DII West Region Championships and the top-seeded Western Oregon men's basketball team navigated the first two rounds of play to advance to the title game for the second time in three seasons.
Western Oregon (31-1), ranked No. 3 in the nation in the latest DII/NABC Coaches' Poll, defeated GNAC rival Saint Martin's, 77-55, on Saturday to advance to the finale and are now one win away from a spot in the DII Elite Eight.
The Wolves will face No. 3-seeded California Baptist (27-5) in the title bout after the Lancers dispatched fellow PacWest member Azusa Pacific, 72-68, in the first semifinal contest.
Opening tip in the championship game is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12 inside the New P.E. Gymnasium on the campus of Western Oregon University.
The game will be the first ever NCAA DII matchup between the two teams.
The GNAC regular season and tournament champions, Western Oregon currently holds the NCAA's (Division I, II or III) longest winning streak at 24 games. Cal Baptist has returned to form at the regional tournament with two straight games after falling to Dixie State (Utah) in the PacWest championship game on March 3.
WOU hosted and won the West Region Championship in 2015-16 when the team advanced to the national semifinals.
Cal Baptist is making its fifth straight appearance at the NCAA DII West Region Tournament. The Lancers are 6-4 all-time at the tournament and will be making their second title game showing following the 2014-15 squad that fell to Azusa Pacific in the championship bout.
