Wolves go cold in 3-0 loss in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS, Alaska—Earning its first win at home this season, the University of Alaska Fairbanks defeated Western Oregon University 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-14) in GNAC volleyball action on Thursday night.

The win moved Alaska (4-10) into a tie with Western Oregon (5-9) in the conference standings as both teams rest with a 2-5 mark in league play.

Despite a strong match by Sophie Hall, the Wolves never carried more than a single point lead at any point in the night. With 11 kills on 19 swings, Hall hit .421 in the contest but WOU was held to a .087 hit rate as a team while the Nanooks used a consistent attack in all here sets to pull away for the sweep.

Alaska hit .257, .244 and .226 in the series and were led by the duo of Tatum Upchurch and Lahra Weber with 11 kills each.

The Wolves held a 9-8 lead in the first following a UAA attack error but soon found themselves into a late hole as the Nanooks rattled off six straight points.

WOU stayed within a point in the second set with the score 19-18 after a Marlie Norman kill, but the home side once again applied the pressure late in the set with three straight points to help secure a 2-0 lead.

Holding WOU to a match-low -.025 hit rate, the Nanooks turned to its defense in the finale.

Finishing with a match-high 12 terminations, Mariella Vandenkooy joined Hall with a double-digit kill performance. Leila Holt registered 21 assists while Maddie Mehciz totaled a team-high 17 figs in the loss.

Western Oregon will continue its Alaska road swing with a Saturday match at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Opening serve against the Seawolves is set for 7 p.m. (AKST).
