MONMOUTH, Ore.—Creating the bookend goals of the match, the Western Oregon University women's soccer team notched a 2-2 tie against undefeated Stanislaus State on Thursday.
Western Oregon (1-1-1) scored the opener in the 36th minute via a Sydney Thomas strike, but conceded a pair of goals late in the first half to enter the break trailing 2-1.
The Wolves found the equalizer in the 55th minute of play when Alyssa Tomasini connected on a soaring free kick from 35 yards out. Stanislaus State (3-0-1) goalkeeper Haley Crook managed to get a slight touch on Tomasini's strike, but the overhead tip failed to clear the crossbar and instead slipped into the netting for a 2-2 score.
WOU nearly snared another lead late in the second half as a Dana Jacobs header found the net, but was taken off the board due to a handball violation.
WOU goalie Alex Qualls came up with eight saves to help preserve the tie. Qualls corralled several dangerous Warrior attempts, including a game-saving stop at the 89:20 mark.
The Wolves will return to their home pitch for a Saturday match against Academy of Art. Opening kick against the Urban Knights is set for 11:30 a.m. at the WOU Soccer Field.
