No. 6 NNU extends streak with win at WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore.—After trailing for most of the first quarter, No. 6-ranked Northwest Nazarene University used a 15-5 run before the break to keep its undefeated season rolling with a 90-70 win at Western Oregon University on Saturday.

Northwest Nazarene (12-0, 4-0 GNAC) entered the game with a +22.5 scoring margin on the season and its smallest margin of victory at 14 points. Western Oregon (4-6, 1-3 GNAC) gave the Nighthawks an early test, however, by generating a 22-18 advantage through the first quarter.

Natalie DeLonge and Ronnie Harris combined to score 13 points in the opener as the Wolves continued its lead into the second quarter.

Avery Albrecht reversed the fortunes for the visiting Nighthawks with eight points over three possessions. Albrecht connected on five straight free throws to start the spree and later added a 3-pointer for a 33-26 NNU lead.

The Nighthawks went on to extend its advantage to as many as 22 points late in the fourth quarter before finishing with the 20-point spread.

NNU's Marina Valles led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Albrecht added 17 while Ellie Logan and McKenna Walker chipped in with 10 points each.

"NNU is a tough team with lots of offensive weapons and they made it tough on us to close the gap after their run in the second quarter," WOU head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "I thought we battled defensively and made them take some tough shots but we didn't quite have an answer for Valles."

DeLonge finished with 14 points to lead the Wolves and added a team-high seven rebounds and four blocks. Keyonna Jones scored nine points and assisted on eight WOU buckets.

The Wolves received 27 points off the bench with Teresa Acock (9 points), Rachel Rogers (7 points) and Tresai McCarver (7 points) contributing on the attack.

"Offensively we executed well early and shared the ball. Keyonna did a great job of finding her teammates and we shot it well tonight," Howard-Carpenter said. "Rachel and Teresa were great off the bench for us tonight and I need to them to continue to play with that kind of confidence."

Western Oregon will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 10 with a GNAC battle at Simon Fraser University.
